I dont know how old your cat is .We have taught ours when we put our leg out and say wait they listen..Well most of the time..We have trained them to wait also while putting food in their dish by putting our hand up by their face and just saying wait. They are the best kitties ever!
Just like with children -its all in the consistency!

Is said cat spayed or neutered? If not, that would be step 1. A cat that is spayed or neutered will be less inclined to leave the house. I had a cat that always wanted to get out before I got her spayed. After the spay, she didn't even look up when the door opened. You'll probably be fighting this fight for a long time. Short of keeping the cat away from all doors that open to the outside, you'll probably just have to keep barring his way outside until he gives up.

Cats are so smart. Stand in front of the door, block the cat in the house, and simply say "No." She/he will get the message after a time or two.
Good luck. My cat got away once and waited for the mail lady and then followed the mail lady back home. She knew her route and when she'd come here, and just waited for her to lead the way. There is no smarter animal than a cat.

Keep a squirt bottle filled with water by the door. If the cat heads for the door, squirt him/her. But also make sure the cat has enough stimulation, play, and window opportunities to keep it entertained inside so it doesn't want to go out so much.

Cats are curious and are hunters by nature. You just can't supress that. And that is against animal rights. lol. Just provide an easy way for him/her to get in back - a small cat door or an open window maybe.

1. Fill squirt bottle with water
2. Go outside
3. Standing outside the door, open the door, with squirt bottle aimed at exit
4. Wait for cat
5. Squirt and scream at cat
6. Toss wet hysterical cat back in house
7. Repeat
8. Repeat
9. Repeat

Do again for several days.

Problem solved. Cats HATE water.

put a squirt bottle so when it runs out..it will squirt at it...also try putting something in the door way that will scare the cat and make it not come near the door.

Have a small cup of water in your hand, open the door, dump the water on the cat. Do as many times as need be until hopefully kitty gets the hint.

I live in Chicago, my two kittens would always try and run outside. So, one day my mother took them outside (the small back area of our apartment). The cold winter air hit them and they realized snow was just another form of water, they jolted back inside, neither of them have tried to go outside since then. Nearly all pets are like children, they usually need to some experience things first hand before they decide that we're stopping them for their own good.
