I also recently got an abused dog ( in march of this year) and I am still getting him to not be so shy and nervous. He was severely emaciated and had been beaten. I have just taken it really slow with him. Also, I enrolled him in a multiple dog training class taught by a local behaviorist, and even though it was kind of expensive, it really did help. I would just really take your time with him, he will get over a lot of it, it just takes time and patience.

My dog was terrified of men (because he was abused by a man), and he still kind of is, but he has slowly warmed up to my father and my boyfriend. This has all happened in the last week or so. He is also scared of water, but he has learned to trust me, and even though he is scared he will let me bathe him. I always try to vacuum with him outside, or at least in the other room, to keep him from being scared.

I crate trained mine, and I never never punish or yell at him when he is in his crate. This has helped because now when he is scared, he will go in his crate for security if I am not available.

We just got a lab from the human society, and for the first week she was scared and all that, but she is now setteled in and you wouldn't know she was that way at all. in fact she is willing to please me and she does enjoy being outside playing and even with the neighbors dogs. She knows her way around now and she has a couple of scars on her face, don't know where they came from but they don't bother her at all. Let your dog take the time to check things out, sometimes the dog will need to do this more than a couple of times but be careful not to introduce the dog to too much at once and repeat what she was introduced to prior to teaching a new one, this really helped us out. One little thing that really got her used to people was when it is feeding time don't take the food dish with and put the food in another room, take a plastic bowl and let the dog come with and introduce the plastic bowl empty the dog food container and then the bowl with dog food and talk to the dog, allow the dog to follow you to feeding area, and watch you pour food in to the dish and praise the dog with simple words like dish and or food, in a clam voice.

Just be patient with him. Trusting people again could take some time. Work him and show him you are the "pack leader" and not there to hurt him but rather protect him. Don't make sudden moves around him and talk to him often. Biggest thing is patience and time. Good luck!

To help get rid of some fears, ( i could be more specific if i knew the fears) my dog was afraid of the leash (?) so i bought a "practice leash" my dog and i went into his favorite room (living room) and i set the leash on the floor he would growl and bark and try to bite the leash ( i soaked it with mouth wash dogs hate it and its totally safe ) when he bit it he tased the mouth wash he then knew not to bite it then we introduced it slowly like i would carry the leash on my shoulder during the day or i would tap him with the leash soon enough he was used to it and got over his fear quite easly. (contact me and i can help you more)

Lots and lots of time and patience. If you know what he is scared of...then steer clear of it. They sem to never forget. I had my dog for 10 years..she was abused before I got her...she hated clothes hangers every single day. She learned to cope with it and I was sensitive to her and earned her trust.

It takes time
Think like you would feel if you were abused. just be patient and let him come to you. After a while he will over come most but not all of his fears...just show him love and patients he will overcome
