Recipe for Rice Crispies Treat Christmas Trees
You'll need:
2 big boxes of Cheerios (original flavor)
2 big boxes of Rice Crispies
6 bags of mini-marshmallows (they melt easier)
Red food coloring
Green food coloring
1 bag of fruit flavored gum drops
1 bag of spice drops
Margarine
Wax paper
2 to 4 big bowls
Take the gum drops, cut them into 4 or 5 slices; same with spice drops. Place slices into 2 different bowls, set aside. A butter knife does the job nicely.
In a big sauce pan or stock pot (what I use) on medium heat melt 2 heaping tablespoons of margarine, turn heat down to medium low, pour 2 bags of mini-marshmallows, melt completely, stir often. Takes about 10 minutes depending on your stove.
Pour green food coloring into the melted marshmallows (I prefer the color to be a dark forest green so I use a lot). When you've achieved your desired shade, pour ½ the box of Cheerios into the pan and mix and coat the cereal, then continue to pour the rest of the cereal into pan, mix. Let stand for about 5 minutes, but no longer or mixture will cool too much and make it harder to shape your treat.
Take a teaspoon of margarine, rub all over hands (be sure to coat your fingers; it is sticky), take a handful of the mixture place it on wax paper and shape it into a tree. I start at the bottom and sculpt upwards. Then take some of the gum drops and press onto the tree for ornaments. Makes about 30 Christmas trees.
Repeat directions above except use Rice Crispies and red food coloring.
Note: Rice Crispies take more to create a tree or you can just keep them small.
If you want a variety; I also set aside some of the mixture and make wreaths with cinnamon drops as holly berries. I make too many so I always end up giving them to my in-laws.
This is a great way to get the kids involved and your spouse. This recipe has been in my family for 3 generations and I'll pass it down to my grandsons. I've made these every year for the past 30 years since I was 13; oh and the cheaper product brands taste just as good.
Merry Christmas!
