Low powered cartridges used in automatic or semi-automatic weapons utilize the principle of blow back. The recoil impulse of the cartridge pushes the bolt or slide to the rear, cocking the weapon and ejecting the spent casing. The mass of the bolt or slide and the strength of the recoil spring are enough to handle a low pressure cartridge.
When a higher pressure cartridge is used, some form of locking is necessary until the chamber pressure has dropped to safe limits. This is generally accomplished in one of two ways: Recoil operation and gas operation. In recoil operation, the barrel is locked to the bolt or slide, and both recoil a short distance. As the pressure drops, the bolt or slide separate from the barrel and completes the travel rearward. When the bolt returns with a new cartridge, it locks up with the barrel and both return to battery. Examples of recoil operation are the U.S. pistols M1911A1 and M9, and the caliber .50 machine gun M2.
In gas operation, there is a small hole in the barrel called a gas port. When the bullet goes past this gas port, some of the propellen gas travels down and either impinges against the gas piston, which travels back and unlocks the bolt from the receiver or barrel extension, or in the case of the M16/M4 weapons, travels down a gas tube. The gas tube is mated to the gas key on the bolt carrier. Gas traveling throught the gas key pushes the bolt carrier back a short distance. A cam in the carrier rotates the bolt head which unlocks it from the barrel extension. Examples of gas operated weaons include the M16/M4 series, the AK-47 series, the M60 and M240 machine guns, the M249 SAW.

The gas (high pressured air) that is created when the gunpowder explodes forces the round through the barrel and down range. Before the round exits the barrel, some of the gas is routed back to carrier assembly (which carries the bolt) to eject the spent shell and cycle another round.

what gas operated means is that when a bullet is fired the expanding gas is what causes the bolt to go back expelling the spent shell and opening the chamber for the next round to enter.
