Are there any firework displays downtown on the mall or anything like that...don't just say yes, tell me about them! Looking for an event that lots of people can go to, for free.

No, there's no fireworks display downtown, but Alexandria has an evening that they do, with no alcohol, and it's cheap, I think, and also on the metro. Fairfax has one, too. These events are called "First Night" and I think cities do it all around the country.
