It depends on the person. Every Christian has their own idea of what god is - and I'm guessing that at least 70% (hopefully) of Christians believe in a benevolent god. In my estimation more Christians view god as "nice" rather than murderous. Muslims on the other hand -- now they seem to have it in their heads that god is murderous.
I personally do not believe in god (guess you could call me agnostic)... I did take a look at that www.needgod.com website - HILARIOUS. Turns out I'm not a good person, and I am going to burn in hell - and I SHOULD care about this. Oh yeah - and by "lusting" for women I see from day to day I made myself an "adulterer". Figures - I didn't even know I was married. I had a good laugh at their website... I suggest others go there and take their little test. It was too much.

I have heard this question asked many times. I understand your confusion with understanding that. He ordered armies to attack and wipe out entire peoples, yet christians say He is a God of love. How does this line up.
Let me try to explain, with love, in a way I hope you can understand.
God did not bring on death and suffering. Death and suffering came about when Adam and Eve sinned the original sin. They didn't believe God but believed Satan. God says the wages of sin is death.
If you work a job as a cashier for minimum wage, then the "wage" for your work is $5 and some change per hour.
The "wages" of sin is death. If you sin, any sin, in thought or deed, your "wages" is death.
God ordered Israel to destroy certain nations. The nations ordered to be destroyed were pagan (not that pagans now adays are anything like those of times past). They participated, some of them, in Moloch worship. They would perform sexual rituals while sacraficing their first born by placing them on a solid metal statue that had been hollowed out in the middle to make a furnace. The furnace was heated and the statue would glow red. The infants were placed in the outstretched sculpted arms of the statue and the poor baby would roll into a hole made for just such a purpose. This was done to improve their standing with their god.
God ordered the destruction of such societies. Children too? yes. Even the animals.
Knowing that children go to heaven is a comfort when thinking about this.
I don't know the full reasons why the destruction was so complete. But knowing that God knows the future and knowing that God is a merciful and loving God, I know He did it for a reason.
Let me also add that death and suffering didn't come from God. God did not make us to destroy us. We fell and brought on death and suffering with the curse when Adam and Eve fell. All people die....even children die. He just controlled the method in which they died. They were all going to die eventually. Even if He did not give this judgement, all these people would be dead by the year 2006 (almost 2007). I'm sorry I wish I could give an answer which gave a more complete answer but I cannot know the mind of God and I don't know the alternative of what would have happened to the world had He not judged this nation. But I do know that sometimes God does things that make sense to me. Knowing that any sin, in thought or in deed brings death and knowing God sent His only Son to die for me that I might live forever, no matter how I die temporally, God has demonstrated that He is a loving God so I trust Him that what He did so many years ago was the right thing. He's God, He can do what He wishes with His creation.

Christians include a wide range of believers and quasi-believers. Some revere a more murderous version of god than others.

Christians worship a loving God.
But He is also a judge, and He judges the rebellious and prideful who refuse to be under His authority.

If the Christian god is a loving God, why did he scourged down Soddom and gomorrah ?? why did he allows Joshua for ethnic cleansing of the cana'anites ???
Why did god allows such things to happened in the past :
2 Rabbis; " for offering strange fire before the Lord", two sons of Aaron, priests of the tabernacle, are struck dead. Lev 10:1-2
11 Rulers; Whom Moses sent to spy out the land, and who returned and made all the congregation to murmur against him by bringing up an evil report against the land, are killed by a plague from the Lord. Num. 14:37
250 Levite princesses; of the Jews who challenged the leadership of Moses. "their wives, sons and little children were swallowed up by the ground", then sent a fire to consume the remaining princes. Num. 16:1-40
3,000 brothers and children; of Israelis "And he said to them, "Thus says the LORD God of Israel, 'Put every man his sword on his side, and go to and fro from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.'" And the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses; and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men." (Exodus 32:21-28) [note: the surviving Israelis are then told in verse 29 that they are blessed for killing their own brothers and children]
14,700; Israeli protesters killed by plague who object to Moses about the prior killing of the 250 Jewish princesses. Num 16:41-49
24,000; Israelites who cohabitated with Moabite women and worshiped Baal. "And the Lord said to Moses, take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the Lord against the sun..." Num 25:4,9
70,000; Israelis for sinning "So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning until the appointed time; and there died of the people from Dan to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men." (2 Samuel 24:10-17)
Now, I challenge the you people to answer me why god is such a double standard that he loves todays modern adulterous generation so much while people in the olden days who did sins that are not as worst as today are killed without mercy ???
Do you want to know one simple answer, the christians invented their own god which is loving. They reject the god which is described in the jewish tanakh which loves people who loves him and hate peoples who broke his commandments....
Bear in mind, God doesn't love everyone because in the jewish tanakh itself it is written " God loves jacob and hate Esau"...
That means God is not as loving as you portrayed he is....

No God doesn't murder, he created us, he can end us whenever he wants. He is in control of whatever time we die, whether it be by a world-wide flood, or a heart attack.
