I have had the same dentist for 20 years. He did a root canal in 2000 and then crowned the tooth. Two years ago, he did a full panoramic film and didn't mention any problems. Six months ago, I went to him and said I wasn't feeling well and that the tooth was loose. I had been sick with a fever since the surgery but my docs didn't know why. He said the tooth wasn't loose and then attempted to get me to have a root canal and crown on a healthy tooth because I said it was sensitive to hot and cold. Last week, I was given a complete oral exam at a dental school. It turns out that my trusted dentist failed to tell me that the film showed an abcess on the tooth where he had done the root canal. He had denied the tooth was loose six months ago and didn't tell me about the abcess. This tooth was deemed mobile and pulled immediately. The dentist admitted in a phone call that he didn't tell me about the problem. A few years ago he lost his license when he did the same thing to someone else.
