This may sound harsh, but use the "tough love" tactic. Regardless of the breed, any dog is bad about this, if "it" isn't broke from the habit when it's young. Like children, dogs can't learn from treats- they need discipline (you have to show them who's in charge). If you catch them in the act, try swatting them (newspapers work well- it won't hurt, but the sound will scare them); if this doesn't work, put them outside (if you have a fence/chain) this will let them know they are in trouble, and it might help to give them a hard chew toy or stick (dogs need to chew on things...); Also, if there's a problem with "people- biting," pinch their lip till they yelp. If they insist on biting, pinch their ear. This isn't cruel... it just shows them that biting hurts... on the other hand, with my dog, neither worked. I just bit her back, and never had a problem. Sorry about the irratably long answer, but it all comes from experience. "Tough love" is a good way to solve the problem, otherwise the pet will think that they are the boss- not you, which can cause other problems farther down the road.

Some say this is a sort of behavior for anxiety in a pet. You can try to learn how to help him cope with that or kennel him when he is bad - like a time out - then praise for good things... you are putting more attention on the bad than good. When he is naughty - get down at his level...say a firm no...then kennel him for 2-5 minutes - dont say anthing else. If it persistst then repeat. It is a good form of behavior modification. When he does good - really praise him huge for it - up your tone, clap - really pet him and love him up. Tone and facial expression and following thru are effective on pets too - just like children.

Rub the toys all over yourself, keep some in your pockets or stuff them in your shoes for an hour or 2, then hand them over to the doggie. It worked for my puppy, they like stuff to smell like us.
Also, you have to IMMEDIATELY get your stuff away from him. Don't chase him or yell, this is great fun to dogs.
Put 10-15 pennies (or small pebbles) in a soda can and tape it shut. (Make a few for each room so they are always handy) When he grabs something of yours, shake the can sharply. Yell "Drop it" and praise him like crazy when he does. They catch on pretty quickly.
Squirt bottles work, but some dogs find that a wonderful game.
Keep your stuff off the floor for now. Just until he catches on.
Good luck

Wow, I know how you feel! My male Yorkie did it when he was little... Now we have a female and she chews on anything and everything too! We actually just got home from a bball game and she had dryer sheets from the trash everywhere... The male finally just grew out of it. I'm hoping the same for her. They have toys everywhere, she just chooses the trash and other things. Guess time will tell... Maybe your will grow out of it too? Good luck!

Crate train. This will keep him (and your stuff!) safe.

Get a kong toy and fill it with peanut butter/yogurt, etc and then freeze over night before giving it to him. This will keep him busy and happy.

There are other things you can do if those don't work. Visit my site at http://www.libertydogtraining.com and let me know if I can help you!

We have had Dobies and Rotts for 30 years. We just got our first Pit and he eats EVERYTHING!!! The only thing we have been able to do is make sure he has lots of big bones and large 'chews'. If you hear of anything, PLEASE, let us know!
