I am just trying to figure out why the USA has become so short sited . . . would we have been able to handle (from a public relations stand point) Iwo Jima or Normandy?
The life of EVERY soldier is a devestation to our country, but was this not true in WWII? How do we now look back on those times?
Saddam was committing genocide. Does that not deserve interventions? If not, what does?

Rachel G... Just how many people have to die before we do something? Was it right that we waited until WE (the US) were attacked to enter WWII, even though we knew of the mass murder under the reign of Hitler?

WWII lasted different periods of time for each country.
Germany invaded France and nearby countries in the late-30's. They tried to invade England in the early 40's
Japan invaded China in the late 30's also.
Italy followed Germany, until they joined with the allies.
America was kept out of the Europe fight by a huge anti-war activity in the states. Most everyone said that Europe's war was not out problem.
Dec 7, things changed here in the US. People wanted to fight the Japanese and around Dec 10th Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S.
Once America became part of the war, it was called a World War.
WWII with Germany lasted Dec 41 through May 45.
WWII with Japan lasted Dec 41 through Sept 45.
With the modern cameras and news organizations, battles like Iwo and Normandy would have been difficult to visualize in the U.S.

I simply cannot believe that anyone can seriously compare the War on Iraq with World War II! We entered into that war because we were attacked by Japan. Hitler murdered over 8,000,000 people including Jews, Gypsys, homosexuals and anyone thought to be "deviant." Saddam never attacked us and never committed genocide to anywhere near that degree. You do a great disservice to the soldiers and sailors and marines who where in the battles of Iwo Jima and Normandy. How can you think anyone would be concerned with public relations if our country was involved in a world conflict? And I'll tell you what "deserves interventions"....it's the situation in Darfur. More people, by far, are being slaughtered there than were by Saddam.

WW2 lasted from September1 1939 to May 8 1945 in Europe and from December 7 1941 to August 1945 in the Pacific.
The total number of people killed is estimated at over 50 million (25 million in Russia alone) but don't forget that civilians are just as important as soldiers.
The trouble with Saddam committing genocide is that he was supported during much of this period by the USA and countries in Europe. It's interesting to note that he has been tried and sentenced to death on only one specific charge of murdering people in retaliation for an attempt on his life.
If he was charged on the genocide , his defence would bring in evidence thet would implicate other countries.

The U.S. suffered over 400,000 casualties during WWII. It would have been a lot more if we hadn't dropped a couple of atomic bombs on Japanese cities. Makes you wonder...
