He was 12!
By the way any one of you mormons know who Oliver Grandger is?
According to your prophet J.Smith 1 out of 3 should be able to tell me. If not I guess he isn't a real prophet. Best of luck.

P.S. Jesus and Satan are not bro's.

First - please do not listen to Disciple...he is incorrect.

This link http://scriptures.lds.org/en/js_h/1 is from the history of Joseph...HIS account, not someone else's..so therefore, if you are going to ask, please at least go to the source for the info whether you choose to believe it or not.

As Coool said, he was sustained by other members of the church as the prophet. Every general conference (which is held every 6 months) we as members sustain all the "higher-up" church leaders, including the prophet, his counselors, the 12 apostles, the quorum of the 70 and so on. In our own wards and stakes is where we sustain the leaders of those specific areas. No one is automatically "in"...they must be sustained and if someone doesn't sustain them, the reason will be reviewed and the person may or may not get the calling. I have never not sustained anyone because I know callings come from the Lord and he chooses the best for the job. In the early days of the church, I believe there was more non-sustaining maybe just because it was new and people were maybe unsure and not too faithful...i don't really know.

The church officially started Apr 06,1830 with five men. Starting then, Joseph was appointed and sustained as the prophet and president of the church; and was sustained every year after by every member. If anyone had a problem with him being a prophet, anyone could speak up without fear. This sustaining occurs even today with all church officials.

In 1820,Joseph Smith claimed to have been given a vison of the Father and the Son. And was told that God had a rather dim view of the Christian church. Joseph Smith was supposedly told by God to launch a new dispensation.

He proclaimed himself to be a prophet. His followers, because he was the founder of the LDS, continued to view him that way long after his death and therefore it caught on.

.....

much sorrow,

[023:069] Or is it that they did not recognize their Messenger (Muhammad [Peace Be Upon Him]) so they deny him?

[023:070] Or say they: "There is madness in him?" Nay, but he brought them the truth (i.e. Tauhîd: worshipping God Alone in all aspects, the Qur'ân and the religion of Islâm), but most of them (the disbelievers) are averse to the truth.

[023:071] And if the truth had been in accordance with their desires, verily, the heavens and the earth, and whosoever is therein would have been corrupted! Nay, We have brought them their reminder, but they turn away from their reminder.

[023:072] Or is it that you (O Muhammad [Peace Be Upon Him]) ask them for some wages? But the recompense of your Lord is better, and He is the Best of those who give sustenance.

[023:073] And certainly, you (O Muhammad [Peace Be Upon Him]) call them to a Straight Path (true religion – Islâmic Monotheism).

[023:074] And verily, those who believe not in the Hereafter are indeed deviating far astray from the Path (true religion – Islâmic Monotheism).

I believe that he "self-proclaimed" in much the same way that Muhammed did when he invented his church.
