I am interpreting (sign language) the music at my church and one of the songs is "God rest ye merry gentlemen" and one of the lines is "O tidings of comfort and joy" -- what exactly does that mean?!?

They are talking about the "good news" that has come, that Christ has come. This news should bring comfort (because Christ was born for them, there to save them) and joy (joy from knowing God and Christ's love).

So I would paraphrase that to say -- God's message gives me faith and happiness.

Good luck!

TIDINGS MEANS NEWS. COMFORT AND JOY MEANS BE JOYFUL AND COMFORTABLE IN EVERYTHING YOU DO NO MATTER HOW NEGATIVE A SITUATION MAY COME YOUR WAY.

The only word that should be causing you trouble would be "tidings", and in this sense, it means "news". So, Jesus' birth brought "news of comfort and joy".

It could also be interpreted as a sort of foretelling, adding a slightly more mystical meaning. Still, it's basically news. It means that with Jesus, came peace and happiness.

The word 'tidings' means 'news', so 'tidings of comfort and joy' means 'news of comfort and joy'.
