Literally it is a type of blood poisoning. I used to work as a veterinary technician. A cat dug its claws into my arm leaving tiny puncture wounds. The wounds healed over quickly and the bacteria got into my blood stream. The lymph nodes on that arm became swollen and extremely sore. I also had these purple lines running down my arm. Because it was an infection, the arm was warm and I ran a fever. So, cat scratch fever can literally be an infection caused by a cat scratch, but it can also be caused by blood poisoning from any sort of wound. Either way, anti-biotics make quick work of it.

Cat scratch fever is caused by the bacteria that enter the skin through scratches made by a cats claws or teeth, as you can imagine they both come in to contact with some pretty dirty things, for instance they dig holes to cover their feaces when they have finished they cover the holes, the itching is caused by the bodies immune system kicking in and producing histamine to help the healing process, this can make the scratched area very inflamed, but you can ease this with an anti-histamine cream available from most good pharmacies.

Cat scratch fever or Cat-scratch disease is a usually benign infectious disease, most commonly found in children 1-2 weeks following a cat scratch. Cat scratch fever presents with tender regional lymphadenopathy, sterile suppurative papules at the site of inoculation, slight fever, headache, chills, backache, abdominal pain, malaise, alteration of mental status, and convulsions. It may take 7 to 14 days, or as long as two months, before symptoms appear. Most cases are benign and self-limiting

It's not an STD.
My understanding (from getting it)-
I had a reaction to a cat scratch. The underside of their nails is filthy, and that entered my body when I was scratched. The site of the scratch was benign, but I developed fever and swollen lymph nodes near the scratch days later.
Treatment was a course of po antibiotics.

It is an infection cause by a cat scratch. Their nails are dirty and contain many germs, especially from their feces. If the bacteria gets into your blood stream and starts causing an infection, your body usually reacts with a fever.

Cat-scratch disease is an infection caused by bacteria (germs) carried in cat saliva. The bacteria can be passed from a cat to a human. Cats may get the bacteria from ticks and fleas, although this hasn't been clearly proven yet.
