We're a society that's always looking for shortcuts to life. If the task at hand isn't a priority or deemed 'to difficult,' we are accustomed to outsourcing or procrastination.

Here's an example ... there is a minor leak coming inside the roof of your home. If you do not have the skills or willingness to solve the problem, one can either:

a) 'Cheat' and outsource this task to a second/third party to fix problem. Although you paid the second/third party, you didn't do anything to stop the leak -- someone else did.

b) Procrastinate for awhile, and at the last second, 'cheat' and throw a tarp over the roof as the leak turns into major flood.

When we need to solve a problem in a short amount of time, cheating tends to be the only solution. In life, there is good cheating and bad cheating. It's human nature. In the scenario above, since the person didn't have the necessary skills to fix the leak, he/she cheated by throwing the tarp over the roof or having someone else solve the problem.

Compare this to taking a school test without proper rehearsal/studying; if a student doesn't know the content, the consequences involved tend to be more negative than positive. The student can 'cheat' and solve the test (or problem) by creating a strategy to get the answer from an external/internal source. If they didn't, they risk being placed in a negative situation; one that could have been avoided if the student deemed the content they were testing on a priority within their life.

Why do people cheat at what? Monopoly?
Everyone else is assuming you mean "Why do people have affairs" so, going with that idea:
People generally have affairs because the partner they have is not meeting their needs, but they don't know how to communicate exactly what they need. Men and women speak such different languages and most of the time they don't even know how to tell each other what they need!
In a nutshell it is:

The top five needs of a man…

Sexual fulfillment

Companionship (having his wife join him in leisure activities – she doesn’t need to go with him to work, but he wants her with him at other times)

Attractive Spouse (someone who tries to look her best. He likes how you look, or he wouldn’t have married you. He wants you to take some pride in your appearance)

Domestic support (some order and the feel of home in the house...)

Admiration (respect, the feeling that she is proud of him)

The top five needs of a woman…

Affection (touch, tenderness, a little romance)

Conversation (somebody who will listen, and respond)

Honesty and Openness (a basic trust, no lies or deception)

Financial Support (somebody who works and provides enough to live comfortably)

Family Commitment (a good dad to the kids)

I say the reason people cheat would be because they get tired of the same old thing. Some people just cant be in a relationship for a long time

Some do it, so that they can get through without a lot of effort, (little realising that it does require a lot of efforts in keeping a watch to see weather they are being watched or not ) some do it for a 'dare' some do it as fun while others do it as they forget out of nervousness.

Insecurity within themselves and are too cowardly to work on their own relationships . They are also selfish and weak in the mind and the flesh. They do these things to destroy their homes on purpose. They also do it to make themselves feel important or special to someone else. It's al boils down to selfishness and hurting people that care about them the most just to satisfy their needs.

People who cheat suffer from a character flaw - they don't value "real" relationships.

Because in todays world everyone has a lot of pressure on them to be the biggest, the best, to have it all.
They often feel the pressure and feel inadequate if they can not acheive it on their own.
So therefore they try to find other ways to get it. They can not settle for anything less
