What is the spanish word for sign? Like a road sign or billboard or strefront sign?

A freind of mine from Ecuador said it is señal but my spanish teacher who is from Puerto Rico says that is used only for a car blinker and that the real word is cartel. Now babelfish translates it as muestra. Could you please explain what the proper words for sign are and their proper context? Gracias

Road sign: Señal
Billboard: Cartel, cartelera.
Streetfront sign: Letrero.

Use señal for street signs like stop, only right, one way, dont stop etc.

Use letrero for billboards like the ones you find in highways and roads, that are used for advertising.
