the fastest way into Manhattan from JFK is take the Air Train to Jamaica Station of the Long Island Rail Road and then take the LIRR into Penn Station- 34th st & 7th ave If you time it just right you can make manhattan in around 35 minutes at the very worst it's still under an hour do not use the subway until you get into manhattan.
I don't know when you're flying in but i do know that you can buy all of your tickets on line and that will save you some time, As far as the LIRR is concerned just buy tickets labeled "Peak".
Google MTA and then go to
New York Metropolitan Transportation Authorityt
then schedules and Then LIRR and work your way through it

Assuming you are flying into either Laguardia or JFK. If you are in Laguardia you can easily arrange car service (15 bucks) to pick you up from LGA and head into Flushing Queens' Chinatown for some awesome Chinese food, drinks and lots of affordable shopping. The Chinatown is huge and it is about 15 mins max from LGA but make sure you get back into the airport about 90 mins before your flight time 1 hour at the latest for domestic NYC to Cali. Car service can be arranged from almost anywhere in flushing, they are packed with car services and even livery cabs, easily flag them down.
If you are heading in JFK then it is harder to find a nice place to visit except you can call car service in advance and head into Flushing as well but the traffic is very unpredictable therefore a 15 min ride can turn easily into a 3 hour nightmare, you cant beat the van wyck (just like seinfeld said). You can go into Jamaica queens for a quick lunch at a nice west indies restaurant and head back to JFK. That is the best advice I can give you. I would not chance going into manhattan because of the unpredictability of NYC traffic. That is the best advice I can give you.

I live in NY,and even tho' its tempting to try to get somwhere,it can be too much of a hassle.
There is the airtrain(5.00) that will connect you with the subway (A train) 2.00.
By the time you do this, well the clock will be ticking.
You can take a taxi into Manhattan, about 40.00 one way, maybe more depending on the traffic.
And this time of year, the traffic is a headache.
Maybe just visit all the terminals on the train and shop. There is no charge to use this within the airport.

If money is not an object you might want to see downtown Manhhattan by cab. The trip each way will take about one hour, so to play it safe give yourself two hours to get back, leaving you two hours. Just tell the cab what your intensions are and he will take you on a sight seeing tour, it might cost you 300-500 dollars. I personaly would not do it, but if it means that much to you that is the best you might do. There is not that much time to go out to a specific place, you would need a least one day.....KECK

No, you won't have much time to do anything.
If you can afford to take a taxi into Manhattan, you may be able to catch a quick lunch before you head back out. However, if you arrive during rush hour, it will take ages just to get to and from the airport. If you take public transport, it'll take hours to get in and out. It's not worth the hassle or the taxi fare.

If you're flying into JFK, you take the bus to the nearest subway and take that into Manhattan. You might as well do it. Hanging around an airport for five hours can be a real drag.

Unfortunately, i doubt it :-(. but you are very hyper, very fast moving, wont be jetlagged, then go for it!
Expect an hour into and out of the city. (-2 hours, 3 left)
Save maybe 30mintutes to an 1hour for security etc(-.5-1). 2/2.5 hours left.
That's some time, im sure if you stuck to one area of new york, you could really do it and have time to enjoy it!

You need to remember that you need to be at the airport at least 2 1/2 before your flight. If you are laying over at Newark it will be easier than if you are at JFK.
