LimeWire is considered as mainstream p2p software. new versions require u to pay them (pro version). So,it's ok for me to say that they're safe, as they are being publicly recognised. Beware of programe files (.exe), where viruses usually sized less than 1MB. Or u can watch the other users rating @ comments on the file by highlighting (mouse cursor pointing at it). Also u can filter out some contents (adult,etc...) from it's preference options. 'Junk' files that are marked with a rubbish bin icon is a bad/unusable file that were rated by other users. But, be aware..Just have ur reliable antivirus running at all cost.
My ratings for LimeWire, 4 out 5. Since they're quite user friendly

Not a big fan of Gnutella Network for sharing (that is Limewire's network, at least it was when I did use it a few years ago), high rate of fakes and if I remember Limewire and Bearshare were CPU hogs. If you have broadband and want music, try uTorrent for the BitTorrent system or Shareaza (bit of a hog) but it connects to torrents, Gnutella and Gnutella2 as well as eDonkey network (great for really rare files). Bittorrent is blazing for large files, movies, software, entire albums (you can often set it to only download the ones you want) Go to www.slyck.com for open discussions on P@P , current legal issues, ratings of the clients for each different protocol and websites that index the files so you can search easier (especially for torrents because of the way it is designed (you download a small *.torrent file which tells uTorrent or other torrent client where to find the files).

Read the forums for other input and if you are going to be risky, download a free program called Peer Guardian 2 to block known malicious or pRIAA/FBIing eyes, I mean prying eyes. I have even seen Dept of Defense owned IPs try to access my machine. Scary!!!

Good Luck

I've been using limewire for years I find it one of the better p2p programs out there

like any p2p program - always play it safe when downloading files and run them through an updated virus scan
you might also want to keep a spyware and adware program on your computer as well and run them to check for spyware or adware files

spybot: search and destroy - can be downloaded at the following site:

adaware - can be downloaded at the following site:

Limewire is used to get music illegally and could infect your computer with spyware, some of which is very hard to get rid of. .
use a differnet program to get your music. Itunes can be expensive some times, got to walmart.com i think they sell songs for 88 cents
