Some do and some don't. I was told by my fiancee that I had to ask her dad before I asked her, but it didn't end up happening that way. The good thing was that when we told him the next day, he couldn't have been more happier.

If both of you are over the "age of majority", none of you have to ask anyone anything. It is common politeness though, to sit down and talk with your parents and let them know what you plan to do.

Common courtesty, that is all!

it's your life, it's your decision how you go about getting engaged. but i'm concerned that you are even asking this question -- if you are going to get married, you should at least be old enough to make this kind of decision for yourselves.

yes people still do it and yes he has to do it. all man like to be respected and your father espc would want be respecte by a guy who want to spend life time with his little girl. it strenghtens the positive and mutual respect between those two men in your life. encourage him to do so.
