Good question. Some schools do use an E. I don't know why they skip it and just go straight to the F.

Some schools use "E" as a temporary grade, saying the course is over, you haven't passed, but still can make up some work and possibly convert it to a passing grade.
Another theory is that since Fail starts with F, that was used to indicate a failing grade.

F stands for Failed is why...some schools actually have E's as A's considering E means Excellent. Hope this helps

Think because
F stand for "failer"
D stands for "Danger of failing"
C stands for "can do better" and "average"
B stands for "Better" and "little above average"
A stands for "Above average"
So E wouldn't go because D means danger of failing, meaning E would have to have a lower meaning, which noone came up with. I think I got all this right!

Because F stands for Fail...or flunk. E just doesn't seem...dramatic enough, I mean what bad word starts with E?...Evil?....Oh man I got an E!!...E's too nice a letter to mean you failed a course.

i don't know... maybe they couldn't think of an E work that was as bad as F is for Failure. Or maybe they didnt want to push F's into the 40% range. They wanted to keep it in the 50% range.

When i was in school, they did give E's - for Effort. I'm not sure what that is about, just you failed but you tried, i guess.
