I hate to say this, but it does sound like a virus. Some years ago I made the mistake of bringing a disk home from work. Soon after my Windows was "stoned." Had to take it in for a cleanup.

Before you do anything, you had better run a full scan, then:

You can check the device driver to see if it is working properly:
cl Start
cl Settings
cl Control Panel
cl System
cl Hardware
cl Device Driver
R-cl on the item to be checked. Click Properties.
That will tell you if the item is working properly.

To update the driver:
Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Hardward, Device Driver
click the icon for the item you want
click the “update driver” button on the toolbar.

As for Word and Excel, have you tried "Detect and Repair"?
Open Word, cl Help, cl Detect and Repair

Repeat for Excel.

Try clicking on the little question mark on top of a page next to the MINIMIZE and EXIT buttons. Type in Microsoft Excel and a bunch of things saved on that program will pop up look for the actual program and click twice and it should be there. :] HOPE I HELPED! :]

it sounds as though you have been attacked by a virus. is that it?

i hope you backed up your files before you set your computer up again. know, though, that you should scan your backup also before you put your files back into your box.

backups will not back up programs themselves, btw.

else, you may need to get a pro to take a look at it. also, some of my geek friends tell me that it's wise to strip your programs and windows from your computer entirely about 2x a year and install them all over again, but man, does that take time! you had BETTER back up your files before you do that!
