I just bought a brand new Nissan Altima 2006 2.5S. I've never had a Nissan before, if someone else has an Altima, or a Nissan, could you pelase tell me what kinda mechanical problems - if any - you've had. Also, how reliable are they? What kind of gas milage do they actually get? (not what the window sticker says - but REALLY) I love this car so far, I just bought it yesterday afternoon. I would just like to know what to expect from it in the future.

These are some Techical Service bulletins already out for this vehicle.

TSB #1: Certain passenger vehicles equipped with 2.5L engines may experience excessive engine oil consumption as a result of improper performance of the piston rings.

CONSEQUENCE:
If the oil is not maintained at least at the minimum level, engine damage can occur and in extreme cases result in an engine fire.

REMEDY:
Nissan has not yet provided a remedy for this campaign. on June 9, 2006, Nissan notified owners of the possibility of excessive oil consumption and the importance of maintaining the oil at a proper level. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

TSB #2: On certain vehicles, the rear subframe may have been manufactured incorrectly, which could result in a crack in a bracket which holds part of the rear suspension.

CONSEQUENCE:
If the bracket is cracked, the stability of the vehicle may be affected under severe driving conditions. This could lead to a loss of control of the vehicle which could result in a crash.

REMEDY:
Dealers will inspect the rear subframe to determine if it was manufactured incorrectly and replace it, if necessary. The recall is expected to begin on February 27, 2006. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

TSB #3: IF YOU CONFIRM

The airflow meter needs to be replaced for any reason,

ACTION

1. Remove the top of the air filter box with airflow meter assembly from the vehicle.

2. Remove the airflow meter sensor from the airflow meter housing.

3. Thoroughly clean the air filter box and the airflow meter housing.

4. Install a new airflow meter sensor.

^ Do Not replace the entire airflow meter housing; replace only the sensor listed in the Parts information.

5. Reinstall the top of the air filter box with airflow meter assembly back into the vehicle with a new Genuine Nissan air filter.

IMPORTANT :The purpose of "ACTION" (above) is to give you a quick idea of the work you will be performing. You MUST closely follow the entire Service Procedure as it contains information that is essential to successfully completing this repair.

TSB #4: SERVICE INFORMATION

In case a vehicle is hard to start during cold weather, we suggest the following procedure.

^ These steps are a review of the procedure outlined in the Owner's Manual.

^ Use these steps when the weather is cold and the engine is hard to start.

1. Press the accelerator pedal down approximately 1/3 of the way to the floor.

2. Hold the accelerator pedal in this position while cranking the engine.

3. Once the engine has started release the accelerator pedal.

NOTE: Do not race the engine while warming it up.

4. If the engine does not start within 15 seconds, stop cranking, wait at least 10 seconds. Then repeat steps 1 through 3.

Once an engine is started in cold weather condition:

^ You should keep the engine running for a minimum of 2-3 minutes before shutting it off.

^ Starting and stopping of the engine over a short period of time may make the vehicle more difficult to restart.

^ It may also adversely affect a vehicle's fuel economy.

Another factor which may affect a vehicles "startability" is the viscosity or thickness of the oil that is used.

^ SAE 5W-30 viscosity engine oil is preferred for all temperatures, all year-round for most models.

^ SAE 5W-30 viscosity oil makes it easier to start the engine and maintain a stable idle during warm-up.

As for Gas mileage, the best way to figure it out is to just reset your trip odometer at each fill up, and keep track of it that way. there is no better reference than expierience.

Current trend is to use Nitrogen inside the tires. More dense than regular air so pressures are more stable. But if you check your tires often you will be ok with good old fashioned air. The Tire plackard on the door jamb (some times under the console lid) is cold tire pressure. So add 3 or 4 psi after you drive and the tires warm up. Also there is a owners hand book section 8 page 39 all the way to page 50 continues to tell you about tire grades and DOT numbers and general information about tires. Depending on your car tires size Altima's use 29 to 35 psi cold pressures.

No worries on the oil consumption issue, this was quickly diagnosed by Nissan and those engines were replaced. They are great cars, take care of it and it will care of you.
