well, it depends. When the figure is in front of the number (for example: #3) it means number. But when it is behind the number (for example: 3#) it means pound. Does that help you?

It's a symbol used for "number" as in "we're #1." It's also a symbol called "pound" as in "enter your account number followed by the pound sign." You call the "#" symbol a pound sign when it's on your phone.
