If you are talking about a new vehicle, you can get the invoice price from http://www.edmunds.com

With a used vehicle there is no way to know exactly what the dealer paid, unless you have access to his financial records. For example, even if you knew that he bought the car at an auction, and knew what he paid for it, you still do not know about all the other expenses that are included in the total cost!

There is the cost of transportation from the auction to the dealership. You also have auction fees, and the cost of the person who went to the auction and bought the car (people do not work for free). There are also inspection and repair costs that have to be included in the total.

Well...You can get the invoice from any one of many sites the most popular being http://www.edmunds.com. Which technically is what the dealer paid....

I was a car salesman and learned a lot about the dealer-manufacture relationship. Technically the dealer pays invoice however the dealer gets money back for hold-back, advertising, customer service score, performance bonuses.... The dealer can even sometimes get discount for taking certain cars that don't sell well or bad colors....etc

This site talks a little about it http://www.azsmith.com/haggle

I assume you asked, for the purpose of getting a good deal on a car. The best way is to contact as many dealers as you can and let them fight for your business.

You should be able to get everything you need, including customer and dealer incentives at Edmunds.
