i have recently added running/jogging to my daily routine after i get home from school and i was wondering about how long i need to run or jog to have it actually be beneficial. for instance, this week i ran 5 days but only for about 10-15 minutes a day, is it even worth doing if im only going to run for that time? how much time should i add to my runs to make it more worth while? thanks

You didn't say what your goals are.

Weight loss?
Train for a specific sport?
Train to run a marathong?
Just general fitness?

These make a difference.

Jogging for 10-15 minutes is a good start towards a fitness regimen. On its own, 10-15 minutes isn't doing much to improve endurance, however. You should be trying to increase the time on your feet and work up to about 30 minutes minimum of jogging 3 days a week. You should not be increasing in large amounts - say a few minutes to 5 minutes per WEEK - to avoid injuries or burnout. As time on your feet increases, you should probably be skipping days (alternating days) so that you have time to recover.

Recovery is how you build up endurance - it is the rest days, not the jogging days, that cause us to improve our fitness level, so as your time jogging increases, start alternating days of jogging and cross-training, or jogging and yoga, or jogging and just walking.

I currently run about 10 miles a day, and 20 on the weekends, but it takes a while to work up to that. If you are having trouble sticking with it (although it doesn't sound like that is happening), set a goal for yourself - train for a 5K (3.1 mile) race or a 10K race. There are tons of these around the country.

Check out coolrunning.com for more info. Good luck! Jogging is a great way to get fit and maintain endurance and cardiac health.

It sounds like you have made a great start. A good rule of thumb is to add 10% volume each week. You ran a total of 50 - 75 minutes last week. So add about 5 - 7.5 minutes this week, and so on each week. Eventually you will need to stop adding minutes because of limited time. Also, the amount of running you eventually do will depend on your goals.

Anything think is going to be worth it, but 10-15 mins a day will only keep you from gainning as much weight so if you trying to lose it id go at least 30 mins a day but work your way up... :) Good luck!

Well it sounds to me thats excellent. But it all depends on how hard you work on your muscles. If you jog for like 5 minutes and walk the rest, its kind of useless especially if you want to gain muscles in your legs. Otherwise, I think its a really good amount. :).

Good Luck! :)
