We just brought home a new puppy - I know that a puppy often cries when its left alone or when it is in a crate, but our puppy whimpers constantly. He whines when he's eating, when he's walking, when we holding him, etc. We just wanted to make sure he was ok - he has been eating, but we've had him for 12 hours and he has yet to do number 2 (he's gone number one in our yard a bunch of times - good dog!).

He is getting anxiety from being separated from his mom. If you go and check out various pet products either online or at pet stores, some sell this stuff that mimics the mothers 'scent' and calms the pup down. They also sell stuffed animals with a 'heart beat' to comfort the puppy.

When I got my Lab puppy, my best friend bought one from the same litter as well. My puppy never whined, not one time, but hers however whined constantly for about 3 weeks until she took my advice. What I did when I picked up Kya was I took baby blankets (5) and toys and rubbed them all over the mother and siblings, covering every inch and let her have one at a time so I had back ups. She never did have separation anxiety which sounds very much like what your puppy has going on. My best friend finally took my advice and it stopped immediately, not a problem since. If you have access back to the Mom, I would try this. Also make sure you have a crate for him to feel safe and comfortable in. It's not cruel, remember up until now he's been sleeping on top of and under his Mom and siblings so it's comforting. Good luck!

I also had a border collie who whined constantly. I don't know your living situation but I do know that I lived in a city and we had leash laws and even tho she was only a puppy, she had no place to run. Everytime a door was opened she tried to get out. I called my vet and she told me that they were meant to herd - to gather animals together (like on the open range) and that she really needed to be on a farm so that she could do what she was meant to do. When she would get away from me outside, she would go straight to all our neighbors who had dogs. I guess she was herding them. Anyway after several weeks, I ended up placing her with a family who had a large cattle and horse farm. I kept in touch with them, and they said she was perfectly happy. She was allowed to roam the farm whenever she pleased and herd all the animals together. I just made the wrong choice in dogs. I should have done a little more research. This may not even apply to your situation but I hope I've given some insight as to a border collie's "job".

Border Collies are EXTREMELY intelligent dogs - they need A LOT of mental simulation.. and are smart enough to know when things change.. he is well aware of A LOT of changes and is whining to soothe himself and to get you to comfort him... normally his mom or litter mates would fill that need

however when at night he is in the crate you need to IGNORE the whines.. NEVER let a pup out if its whining - this will train it to whine even more....

its normal for them not to eat or poop for 24 hours.. make sure you are feeding it the same food it was on at the breeder.. make all food changes slowly

make sure you meet this pups mental needs or it will become VERY destructive

Maybe there is something physically wrong with him. Before you can say it's behavioral, you have to rule out the physical. You should take him to the vet, he could be in a lot of pain. It doesn't sound normal to me.

when we got our puppy he cried a lot too......he misses his mom and siblings :( my mom would wake up in the middle of the night when he would cry and hold him...as if he were a baby....he is so loyal to my mom now...its very cute! even though he is a dog he has feelings and needs to adjust. just give him a lot of TLC!!!

your puppy is missing its mother step in and be its adopted mom it needs special attention . border collies are really one person dogs so be that one person and have a lot of patients.

take him to the vet and get a full exam done on him. dogs can't say "hey i got a toothache". They cry to let you know that they're not feeling good, no matter where it is.
