Chanukah is nothing like Christmas and has no relation to Christmas. It is essentially about triumphing over religious persecution.
It is an 8-day festival to commemorate the victory of the Maccabees in taking back the temple in Jerusalem from the oppressors.
The temple had to be cleansed, and then they only found one day's worth of sanctified oil for the menorah. That small amount of oil burned miraculously for 8 days during the time of dedication of the temple, time enough for more oil to be sanctified. Chanukah means Dedication.

It was the Syrian armies of Antiocus Epiphanes. He was basically warring against the Greek Egyptians and Israel was trodden over more than Belgium during WWI and II.While he was running back and forth trying to kick Ptolomey's @ss,he would kick the Jews around for fun.Even sacrificing a Pig on the Alter of God,and setting up a statue of Zeus .Jesus called this the" Abomination of Desolation" that Daniel had forseen years before it happened.Once Judas Macabeus and his sons cleared the Syrians out .The priests had to cleanse and re-dedicate the temple.I believe it is John ch 11,where Jesus is celibrating the Feast of Dedication, that is Hannukah.I don't know if the "Oil" thing is true but the rest is.
