What alternatives do I have other than putting the dog to sleep? Is there a place that would take in dogs. Its a Cocker Spaniel, well house trained and 4 years old.

There are many Cocker Spaniel rescues in every state, such as these> http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&client=firefox-a&channel=s&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=mZ6&q=cocker+spaniel+rescue&btnG=Search
Or, put in your own zip code to find the rescue nearest you here> http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?action=1&pet.Animal=Dog&pet.Breed=cocker+spaniel&pet.Age=&pet.Size=&pet.Sex=&location=NY&preview=1&scope=0&x=7&y=10
These rescues do a very good job of finding the perfect forever homes..

There are plenty of options. Unless the dog is really sick or has behavioral issues (vicious) my best advice is to take the dog to a shelter. You can even call rescue societies that deal only with cocker spaniels. You can get in touch with this rescue group and maybe they can step in and take the dog and place him in a better home.

I hope you can keep this dog alive long enough to get him rescued.

I had this dog named Vince. He was alive even before I was born. He was my life-long friend. He was the best, most brave, kind, and wonderful dog ever. He smelled awful a lot, and had ear infections which we cured over and over again. We never wanted to see him go even though all of that had been noticeable. He started walking funny around the house and a few years later it became so hard for him, it was terribly sad. We waited. We wanted him to pass away in our house. But then one day came where his ear infection leaked into his eye at night and we didn't know. His eye got puffy and he couldn't barely see. My mom, my brother, and I cried and cried. He was 15 years old. It was... so sad. So we took him to the vet, but I couldn't bare to be there. I kissed him goodbye and then my mom and him drove away to the vet. Let me tell you this, it was both a terrible and difficult moment, and a beautiful moment. I remembered all of the great, amazing things he's been through. His entire life with our loving family. All the funny things he did, all the times we went to the beach and he played in the water. He was an American Bulldog... a happy one, at that. Your dog may be in terrible pain constantly. He can barely move. He has cancer. He's lived a long, happy life. I don't believe in heaven, but even I know he's in a better place, and his soul lives on. I always know his memories are here to stay, even if he isn't. It isn't too early, it's the right time. Stick by his side, let him know he's the best dog that was ever owned. Love him, hold him, kiss him, be his best friend until the end. I regret not being there when my dog was put down, but I suggest you go with him. Love him till the end. I know it may sound silly, but he doesn't have a choice whether you decide or he dies naturally. But you have the choice to end his pain, and be there and know that it is ending. I'm so sorry this is so lengthy, I'm kind of teary eyed. I wish you the best of luck. Be there for him... he will forever be with you. xoxo ~Brooke

WHY the heck do they want to do that? That's terrible! You can call rescue groups for cocker spaniels in your area, that's the best place to put them, so they don't go to a shelter and get put to sleep.

PS: NEVER use "free to a good home", charge at least 10 dollars, so you eliminate irresponsible or bad people from picking up your dog. Plus, get at least 3 references from anyone who wants your dog. If they complain, then don't give them your dog. Any honest person would be happy to give references.

Unless there is some problem with dog such as biting, it should be pretty easy to find it a home.
But I'd try to find a home for it and make a shelter the last resort since many have a certain length of time they allow for adoption and then put them to sleep. And there is the matter of the adoption fee from a shelter. For a 4 year old dog, "free to good home" will get it a home a lot faster.

Good luck!

whose dog is it and why are they wanting to put it to sleep??

is it YOUR dog or their dog??? whose name is on the registration papers?? that is who owns the dog and who can determine what is to be done with the dog

you can look for a Cocker Rescue to take the dog
SPCA's will take them and try to adopt them out... or may even give you the name of people looking for a Cocker...
if the dog is a purebred and you got it from a reputable breeder - then the breeder will take the dog back...

DO NOT give the dog away for free unless its spayed or neutered and you check who you are giving it to... research labs have people who pick up free pets ALL THE TIME.. and worse...

basically, as I said.. the decision lies with the dogs rightful owner.. either you or your parents.. why dont you move out and take the dog with you if you are old enough?

you forgot to tell us what's wrong with the dog. If he's in perfect health, it would be meaningless to put the dog to sleep. if he has an inoperable tumor, then yeah, perhaps it would be best.

Next time, give us more information. That way, we can tell you what we think instead of waiting for you to click that "add details" button and put the reason why your parents think your dog needs to be put to sleep.
