People can talk all this stuff about it being Jesus' birthday etc. etc. and all that is true.
But your question is what's the big deal about Christmas, and you qualify the question with some ideas that are very real.
First of all, I am not a Scrooge, I think giving gifts is nice, but has gotten to the point where the presents are more important than anything else.
Unfortunately, our society has become so corrupted with instant gratification and the kids only care about getting those things that they know their friends are going to have. It's unfortunate that we have come to this point in our society but here is where we are ..
The true meaning of Christmas has been lost for a long time. I have known families that were in deep financial straits with hardly enough money to buy food, rent due, car payment due, and yet borrowed money so they could buy toys that would be destroyed in two weeks. All in the name of tradition. Just because it is something that has always been done doesn't necessarily mean it is necessary to do every year.
I am going to be candid with you and everyone. I can tell you this: There were Christmas days when we did not have presents under the tree. Our family was poor. But you have to understand, it wasn't a problem, because in those days, nobody had money .
I believe that it is fine for those who can afford to splurge on kids, but I also believe that it should be tempered with judgment so the kids will know the meaning of Christmas. And not to associate Christmas with expensive gifts every year. That, to me, is a sin.

I completely understood the true meaning of Christmas since I was little because of what my parents taught me. I also learned it from watching a lot of Christmas movies. lol
I think Christmas is a little too materialistic and sends the wrong message to people, especially children. Though, as weird as I sound, I enjoy the stress of shopping for people I love. It's all part of the spirit of the season. ;) lol

I agree with your feelings, but will say that I am enjoying the holiday now that my children, ages 3 and 5, are so into it.
We make a point of talking about the Nativity and my kids play with them all year long. So, for us, it really is like building toward a big birthday party.
I like Christmas now, but between childhood and having children of my own, I was not a fan.

I think its not an etiquette question, to begin with and that a good gift for you would be a dictionary. Also, If you don't know what "the big deal" is , by now, you are probably too brain damaged to understand any explanation.
