Possums are harmless. They are marsupials and NOT mammals, so they can't get rabies. They are scavengers and mostly eat dead stuff. My dogs 'killed' one, I think it was playing possum though.
Don't keep dog or cat food out at night, they are attracted to it. Once it sees it can't get a free meal, it'll mosey on away.

Don't call animal control, many times they kill them and treat them inhumanely, like keeping them in a cage for 4 days till they die.

To start with, saying a marsupial is not a mammal is like saying a frog is not an anphibian. Marsupials are mamals with pouches and whoever doesn't understand that needs to do some research before they ever try to answer a question like this.
As for your possum problem, and I'm assuming it's the "ugly" gray animal that hangs upside down from it's tail in movies, and exterminator would be good to call if you want the "varmint" dead. If you'd rather do something that'll be morally correct, though, go out and get yourself a humane trap, catch the little bugger and either relocate it deep into the woods or take it to animal control for them to relocate it. No reason to kill anything that's not hurting any people or reaking havoc on the ecosystem.
Or you could just let your dog loose, take something with you to catch it *like a large, thick blanket you don't care about to throw over it to prevent scratches or bites when it realises you know it's not dead* And do what you would if you had gotten a trap to capture it, relocate it.

Call your local animal control facility or call the police.
Sometimes you can get a cat trap from your local animal control and trap the animal yourself as they are pretty much nocturnal and come out to seek food. . . do you have a dog or cat food outside?
You can bait the trap with an open can of dog food but you will have to wire the can to the cage as they are crafty and can get the can out and often times they do not set the trap.
Sometimes I empty the can of dog food onto the ground and place the trap on top of the food. . smash the cage into the dog food, they can get to the food while setting the trap.
I also make the cage as safe from the elements of the weather as I am not out to torture the animal as heat and cold extremes will do if the animal has to stay overnight or during the day in the trap.
You will stand a better chance of catching the varmit yourself with a cat trap and call the animal control to come out to get the trap.

P.S. Though many have told you that opposums are harmless, that is not totally true.
Though they will play dead when they feel threatened for the most part,I have actually seen very aggressive ones and since they ARE warmblooded animals, there is ALWAYS the chance that rabies is present so unless you know what you are doing. . NEVER - - - NEVER take on catching a opposum with your own two hands unless you know what you are doing.
Opposums carry alot of bacteria in their mouth and even if they aren't rabid,a bite from those tiny sharp teeth can really cause you a NASTY infection.

I hate to tell you, but you probably can't. I once a had a possum living under the shed in my back yard for years. I managed to catch the very first one by throwing a clothes basket over it while it was playing dead , and someone I know who rescued possums came and saved it.

However, another one moved right in without hesitation, and it's been going on for years. I can't tell you how many have lived under my shed over the past 20 years. Short of tearing down my shed, I think it's hopeless.

EDIT TO ADD:

Tammy is right. They are harmless.

You could call animal control or u could be unique. Traps normally work or if u enjoy achery u could use the possum for target practice. U can also scare it off with a bb or airsoft gun. Threr are plenty of fun ways to do it! If you want your dog to be satisfied u should lure it into your yard with food and than sick your dog on it. Just some ideas... be creative!!

Just go get a live trap and put some leftovers in it. You'll have that possum caught in no time : )
