Zack ~
In my opinion, shadowboxing can be a tremendous workout if you're doing it properly, snap your punches as you lock your elbows as you get full extension of your arms, you should punch as if you are punching through an opponent.

Work on your footwork as you're throwing punches, stay on the balls of your feet when moving and when you plant your feet to throw hard shots, work your pivot and you rolls. Imagine your opponent is throwing shots back at you and work on counters to his misses.

Your heartbeat will be up in no time at all. Good luck Zack.

Shadowboxing is good exercise but it can get a little boring if you rarely have an opportunity to actually practice your skills against an opponent. Practicing against an opponent helps your muscles learn certain movements, punches, and defense. If you can visualize these actions and reactions, and "feel" them, it improves the quality and work-out that shadowboxing is supposed to give.

It helps footwork too - which is a major benefit in any sport.

Its pure cardiovascular. It may be good if you are away from home or something but it would be better to use a lightweight bag or speed bag. Also make sure not to stand too close to the wall when you are punching, it will win.
