An inflamation of your vocal cords prevents them from working properly. The inflamation can be caused by a strain or an infection like a cold.

I lose my voice from screaming at the top of my lungs at a ball game that is really exciting,or at a man that is really a cold-hearted jerk!Or it could be from getting a severe sore throat infection!

The voice is lost when the vocal cord or the voice box is damaged.

If you have intermittent aphonia (losing your voice at odd times, not related to vocal abuse), you may have one or a combination of;
1. your vocal cords are bowed
2. one vocal cord is thicker than the other
3. one vocal cord is partially paralized
4 you have spasmodic dysphonia (basically, laryngeal stuttering)
You really need to see an ENT (ear, nose and throat specialist) for a diagnosis. The doctor will refer you to a speech pathologist for treatment.
