my first language was spanish and i had to learn to speak english. for me it was just easiest just conversate with people who speak the language. yeah i took spanish classes in highschool too and i agree they are rather boring and teach you "formal" spanish not "slang"spanish you hear everyday. just find some people who know spanish and ask them how to say stuff in spanish. for me i have to make notes to remind me of how to say something. i use the voice recorder on my phone to make notes of something i want to remember. i am currently learning to speak russian and portuguese and that's what i do to help me remind me on how to say stuff.
books and cds and stuff really don't teach you what you want to learn. like i said just go out and find people who speak it. just ask, most people are glad to help.

I would say maybe go to the library and see what spanish english things there are.
I like the spanish english tapes and cds. I think that is allright to learn spanish.
You can get some spanish english things at www.pentonoverseas.com
You can practise some spanish at www.learnspanish.com
I think that learnspanish.com site is a nice website to learn spanish and the spanish there seems correct and some people that I know that speak decent spanish says that the spanish at www.learnspanish.com is pretty much correct.
If you get some books like some spanish english books sometimes some things might not be correct in spanish though.
Sometimes some things might not be correct in spanish at some spanish english tapes and cds too though.
I would say see what spanish english books there is and study some or maybe see what spanish english tapes and cds there is and practise some.
Speak some with some people who speak spanish. practice some

to learn spanish you need to be surrounded by it daily and hear it consistently. That is why a lot of people will take trips to study spanish abroad so they can be consumed by the language and not have the crutch of going back to their primary language.

Spanish classes arent very effective due to the fact many students dont pay attention in the first place..haha.
other than that.. many spanish teachers just teach the basics and not what people need to know to hold a conversation.

I started learning it 9 year ago in my freshman year of high school and I chose it over French because I thought it to be more practical than the other choices.. First and foremost, though, I'm learning it because I'm so interested in foreign languages. It's really a beautiful language, and even though I'm OK at it and have carried on conversations with people on trips to Mexico, I feel like I still have a lot of work to do.

Go to someplace where you don't have a choice.

Seriously.

If you spend a week in a Mexican village where no one speaks English, you will be THINKING in Spanish at the end of the week. That is the key... to have your brain start thinking in the language that you're learning.

With music, buy spanish singers but there are difference between acents: Spain, Mexico, Venezuela & Argentina...
Check the letter of the songs, get a dictionary and sing.

Perhaps you can try watching spanish television, just to hear how things are pronounced & maybe go to your local library & check out audio tapes/cd's. That would be the best way to do it for free :)
