Their job is to make sure you are tough, not only to fight, but to handle the extreme—and I can't understate this enough—extreme rigours of combat, killing other people, and watching your friends and countrymen die. You can't possibly understand the confusion and emotions that war brings out until you experience and Boot Camp is a crash course in getting you ready for that.
An army needs people who are tough enough to handle that so they can defend the country. If you can't handle it, you're going to be target practice for the enemy and wind up dead without having done anything useful.

I was in the Army and I'll be the first to admit that Army boot camp isn't as hard as Marine boot camp, but there used to be the same mentality in the way they were both structured. The Army has severely watered down their version but boot camp is supposed to make you mentally tough, physically strong, and disciplined. The military, especially the Marine Corps and Army, have an unenviable job of taking a bunch of people that can't even make it to their job at McDonalds on time into soldiers and marines that can take orders and possibley kill someone. I think half the thinking is if you can't take an insult or mild hazing then how the hell are you going to react in a combat zone.

You are in bootcamp for one purpose only. To become a Marine. And the Drill INSTRUCTORS Are there to make you into just that. Nothing less. Marines! As far as your family you probably love them alot but dont let anyone ever tell you youre not good enough. That would make me do it just to prove everyone wrong and make them proud. If you want to be a Marine do it. It is a honor. The Drill Instructors are ther just to make Marines by any means necessary. I saw my Drill Instructors way after I graduated bootcamp they were all cool but at bootcamp being mentors and instructors is what they are supposed to do. Join the Corps its really a good thing. Be stronger mentally than physically. One could always train the body!!

who cares if they insult you, if you cant handle being told what to do and when to do it, then dont join, listen to your friends.
its a drill sargeant's job to break you down of your civilian bs, and built you up to be a marine. it is hell no doubt, but when you stand up and are called "UNITED STATES MARINE" you have a membership that very few have. THEY ARE THE ELITE,
THEY ARE THE UNITED STATES MARINES". marines are hard core, all the way. but you would never question your safety when in combat with a marine at your side. dont waste your time or theres if you cant handle the hell that goes with becoming a marine.
i served in the army, and every marine has my respect.

I am a former Army man myself but boot camp is boot camp, though each branch is different the concept is the same. Train everyone and weed out the non-hackers and non-conformists individuals. If you can't stand being insulted or mind games I wouldn't enlist. The service is not for everyone.

Boot camp is hell for a reason, because actual war is hell. As for your family and friends they only know what you let them know. If you think you can handle being a marine by all means try.

Yes they do, but it is only done to make you as good as you can be. The mental part doesn't really last that long. Once they know they have gotten too you, they actually can turn into human beings, once you are out of boot camp. Do what you are told and try not to stand out and you will be fine.

I'll let you in on a little secret. The main purpose of all the yelling and insults are to place you under as much stress as possible. That is it. The military, and the guy beside you need to know that you can perform your duties while under extreme duress. If you are going to flip out and run away, or whatever they need to know that up front.

Its all in your head, Its only hard if you think its hard. I loved the running in boot, I though it was fun. Yes, it is a D.Is job to be a dick somedays, but they're doing their jobs to make you the Marine you want to be. And if your family gives you Hell for wanting to better yourself and serve your country. Screw em'. Its your life and you should Live it.
