The falling away, rebellion, apostasy. I don't think it means people who are actually saved/ born again, but that people on the world will rebell against God openly. Some folk actually do it now, but then I believe it will be mass. Almost everyone-publicly denying God openly and belligerently.

Wow. Lot's of answers. I've been a teacher of the end times for many years, and I haven't heard many of these.
This passage is about the end times. v1 says "our being gathered to him", this is a reference to the rapture of the church which will occur before the 7 year tribulation begins.
v2 says "do not become alarmed". They Thessalonians thought they had missed the rapture!! They didn't understand that they couldn't miss it...every person born again will be caught up with the Lord. This is the start of the "Day of the Lord" (v2)
v3 says "that day will not come until the '_______' comes first." Now, the KJV says 'falling away'. NASB says 'apostasy'. NIV says 'rebellion'.
The Greek word here is 'apostasia' which means: 1) defection from truth, falling away, apostasy; OR 2) a taking away.
So I actually believe we have two meanings here. I think there will be an apostasy, a moving away from the truth of God's Word by the church and the world in general. We are already seeing this now!! But I also believe it means the rapture (taking away) will occur before the "man of lawlessness is revealed". That is, the anti-christ.
For in v6-8 we see that the anti-christ is being held back until he is taken out of the way. He (the Holy Spirit) is "taken out of the way" at the rapture, for He indwells the church.
v9 makes this more clear that we are talking about the end times and the coming of the anti-christ.
This passage DOES NOT MEAN that a true Christian (one who is born again) can fall away from Jesus Christ (e.g. lose their salvation). Once you have been born again, you can't be UN-born. We are secure in Christ.
Read: Rom 8:38-39; 2 Cor 1:21-22; Eph 1:13-14
Blessings,
Cap

This scripture is pretty clear. It says for us as Christians not to be decieved by any man.
Psalms 118:8 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.
Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Matthew 24:11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
Matthew 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
We born again Christians are the Elect. The meaning of the words Falling away--Feminine of the same as G647; defection from truth (properly the state), (“apostasy”): - falling away, forsake.
Get yourself a bible dictionary and use it when you study your bible. Also down load this free bible onto your computer that comes with all the difinations for words you dont' understand...

It simply means that the antichrist won't show himself until after the falling away, which is when people reject God as many are doing on a daily basis. Just look at the US, and how it used to be described as a christian nation. It's certainly not anymore, no more prayer in school, even the pledge of allegiance is suspect now, no more christmas in school, and the growing trend toward atheism. Look at all the atheists just on YA spending hours of their time doing nothing but trying to pry christians from God. So yeah, the great falling away is happening, has been happening for some time. Europe has a lead on us though, but we're catching up.

Let me give you the version from the NIV: Don't let anyone decieve you in any way, for [that day will not come] until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to descruction. 4 He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshipped, so that he can set himslef up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God.
The second letter to the Thessalonians mentions three groups of people who were troubling the church in Thessalonica.
1:4-10 refers to Persecutors
2:2-3 is talking about false teachers(according to the NIV, it sounds to me like he could also be speaking about the Anti-Christ)
and 3:6-15 is talking about lazy people (loafers)
2 Thessalonians is talking about the Great Rebellion.
More places in the bible to read about the Great Rebellion are:
Matthew 24:10-13
John 15:21-22
1 Timothy 4:1-3
2 Timothy 3:1-9
2 Peter 3:3-5
Jude 1:17-19
Revelation 3:10

This scripture shows that in the last days many would reject or fall away from truthful teachings.
Paul later wrote to Timothy that “there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching, but, in accord with their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves to have their ears tickled; and they will turn their ears away from the truth.”
The apostle Paul foretold something else that would mark this counterfeit religious system. He wrote: “Let no one seduce you in any manner, because [God's day] will not come unless the apostasy comes first and the man of lawlessness gets revealed.” This “man of lawlessness” is none other than the clergy class that exalted itself into a ruling position over the “Christian” congregation.
The apostasy started in the apostle Paul’s day. It accelerated once the apostles died and their restraining influence disappeared. It would be marked, said Paul, by “the operation of Satan with every powerful work and lying signs and portents and with every unrighteous deception.” How accurately that describes the activities of so many religious leaders throughout history!
In support of their claim that Roman Catholicism is the one true church, Catholic leaders say that their bishops have “a life-giving contact with the original apostles by a current of succession which goes back to the beginning.” In truth, this claim of apostolic succession has no historical or Scriptural basis. There is no credible evidence that the church system that arose following the death of Jesus’ apostles was ever directed by God’s holy spirit.
And what of the other churches that sprang up following the so-called Reformation? Did they return to the model of the early Christian congregation? Did they restore the purity of the original Christian congregation? It is true that following the Reformation, the Bible became available to many of the common people in their own language. Yet, history shows that these churches continued to teach erroneous doctrines.
Note this, however. Jesus Christ definitely foretold that his one true congregation would be restored during what he called a conclusion of a system of things. (Matthew 13:30, 39) The fulfillment of Bible prophecies shows that we are now living in that time. (Matthew 24:3-35) That being true, each of us needs to ask, ‘Where is that one true church?’
Maybe you feel that you have already found that church, or congregation. It is important that you make sure. Why? Because as in the first century, there can be only one true church. Have you taken the time to make sure that your church closely conforms to the pattern set by the first-century Christian congregation and that it loyally adheres to the teachings of Jesus Christ?

It just means that if you ever think that a fellow Christian's advice could be wrong or 'decieving', then line it up with the word and see if it's right. Always ask advice from the wise and expierienced people about the subject you're asking.
(Proverbs 13,14)
Falling away is like when Christians "backslide" and fall away from God simply by not sustaining a relationship with him. You can't have a good friendship with someone without doing stuff/talking with them.
And yes, it does mean that. The anti-christ will decieve many Christians (even into getting 666 put on thier bodies!) Ah!

The book of revelations describes two groups of people following Jesus here are who they are; Revelation 3:5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.
this group is the good group and are saved, but the other group fights against these people, and near the End of Time a greater number of people will rise against God's people. This spirit is the same spirit that caused so many Jews to be killed in WW II . Also retarded people and Jehovah witnesses, and gypsies were all killed with the Jews. Hitler was a type or shadow of this man of Sin. If you want to see what this man will do study Hitler, but this new man will rise from the USA, or have America's backing. Fiancial trouble will probably be the cause, but history will repeat and America will be the one doing the killing, very likely backed by religious churches for the protection of their children. This is the great falling away talked about by the Bible, and here is Jesus words about it; Revelation 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.Revelation 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
And here is the reason why! John 16:2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

When Paul wrote 1 Thessalonians, the believers were in danger of losing hope in the Second coming. In this matter, Paul was correcting the opposite extreme- that Jesus had already come.
The falling away Paul declared must come first meaning..a military rebellion but in scripture the word is used to rebellion against God....the antichrist...understanding the rapture...the church falling away could mean any of these

Verse 3
[3] Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
Unless the falling away — From the pure faith of the gospel, come first. This began even in the apostolic age. But the man of sin, the son of perdition - Eminently so called, is not come yet. However, in many respects, the Pope has an indisputable claim to those titles. He is, in an emphatical sense, the man of sin, as he increases all manner of sin above measure. And he is, too, properly styled, the son of perdition, as he has caused the death of numberless multitudes, both of his opposers and followers, destroyed innumerable souls, and will himself perish everlastingly. He it is that opposeth himself to the emperor, once his rightful sovereign; and that exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped - Commanding angels, and putting kings under his feet, both of whom are called gods in scripture; claiming the highest power, the highest honour; suffering himself, not once only, to be styled God or vice-god. Indeed no less is implied in his ordinary title, "Most Holy Lord," or, "Most Holy Father." So that he sitteth - Enthroned.
In the temple of God — Mentioned Revelation 11:1.
Declaring himself that he is God — Claiming the prerogatives which belong to God alone.
