I think there must be a good reason beyond poverty for a family to have disowned a member.

What do I think of a family who disowns a member because of poverty? Simple: not much!
I realize that all families have problems, but if one isn't as successful as the rest, why salt the wound? I'm sure the sister is quite unhappy enough as it is, to not be the heavy hitter that her family seems to expect.
My own family is working class, and trust me, we've had some disagreements over the years, but break off relations with one another because of them? That ain't happening! The thing that we always seem to remember is we all had the same mother, we grew up together, and if you're going to survive then you need to have that unity.
I had a situation many years ago in which my life was in serious jeopardy. My two younger brothers were in one of their periodic spells of being angry with one another, but as soon as the one heard about my situation, he called our brother at once and said I needed them both, and their own disagreement was too trifling to deal with. They were at my side as soon as they could arrange time off from their jobs. Why? Because families stick together when one of the members is hurting.
It's so sad, to me, that this poor woman doesn't have that sort of bedrock love and support.

No kidding. That sounds like something out of a bad sitcom, not from real life. That family needs serious therapy.

that is sad actually.everyone has faults, falls on hard times and no one is perfect.People have to enjoy family why we are here. You never know.If something would happen, one would feel guilty because they never got to chance to say to them thier sorry.
Life is too short to not love eachother, learn from eachother and make the best of what you have. BE thankfull for what your givin in your life and be honest.

If it's truely just because you are poor, who needs them. Try looking a little deeper, maybe make the first move by sending them a card.

"Family" doesn't act that way.... but blood relations sometimes do. Sad.... and they need a touch from God to change it.
Best Wishes,
