4 month & 10 month old......

They eat about 5 cans of cat food a day.... and poop so much that I have to replace the litter every day. They go through a whole 20 lb litter in less than a week.

I am thinking about returning them to the pound!

Try switching to dry cat food; it's much less expensive. Two cats should go through a 20 pound bag of dry cat food every month, and that should only set you back about $10 to $20 depending on if you purchase a really good brand or a generic store brand.
If you get the scoopable clumping litter, you can scoop out the clumps and save the rest of the litter. Just add a little bit more litter when it gets low. According to the box, you should only need to change it completely once every two weeks to a month. It costs a bit more than the regular litter, but if you use less of it, you will save money in the end.
Odds are that if you return your kittens to the pound, they will be euthanized. There are so many older kittens and cats that need good homes out there, and few people willing to adopt them.
If you need to get rid of your cats, try to find them a good home without returning them to the shelter, or find a no-kill shelter that's willing to take them.
Hope this helps!

If you are buying a cheap food this could be part of the problem. Try switching to a premium brand. It will cost more but they will eat less of it and poop less so you save on litter. My adult cat eats about 3/4 of a can to 1 can per day. He usually only poops one time per day. When I wasn't able to get his usual food (Royal Canin is what I feed him) I bought something else at the grocery. The new food said to feed 2 cans a day and he wanted even more. He also pooped about 4 times a day. As soon as I got the Royal Canin again he was back to normal.

I usually filled a bowl of food twice a day, kittens will and need to eat a lot!! they'll slow down after about a year, as far as the litter, I suggest you use the clumping kind so that you only throw out the poops not, not the whole litter!

I'm sure you're just trying to be a caring pet owner but that's way too much food for them. Put out one large bowl of dry cat food a day. If you want to give them wet food, one large can split between them in the morning and one large can in the evening is okay to give with the dry food. The pooping will return to the normal once or twice a day function and the cats will be less strain on you and much healthier.

Before you do that you need to assess what you are feeding your "kids"

If you are buying low quality food from the grocery store you are not satisfying their nutritional needs and they are being filled up with indigestible protein and corn and it all comes out the other end. So they are quite literally starving for decent food.

You can feed your kittens Natural Balance foods, both canned and dry. That brand is the least expensive of the quality foods. They do not need "kitten" food if you choose foods that have no by-product meat and no corn. Solid Gold is a good dry food and also inexpensive. Felidae costs more and it is an excellent food with both canned and dry products.

Go to www.littlebigcat.com and read Dr. Jean Hovfe's article titled "Selecting a Good Commercial Pet Food". This will give you an education on how to read pet food labels and choose the highest quality for your kittens.

The reason the kittens are eating and pooping so much is because their food is so lacking in nutrients that they have to eat tons of it to survive, and since most of the food isn't even digestable to kittens, they end up pooping it all out.

Try switching to a completely raw diet, its much better for the kittens, as it contains no veggies or grains (cats are %100 carnivorious), and it contains actual -meat- unlike canned or dry commercial food (almost all grains, and the few actual animal parts are usually chicken beaks, feathers, and tumors from cattle and swine).

My two kittens eat about an 1/8 pound of food a day, each. We buy ground chicken neck and back (.89 cents a pound), and chicken heart (cats need a bit of heart meat everyday because it contains taurine - a necessary protein that helps prevent heart problems later in life, if cats go without it, they will most likely die of congestive heart failure or a heart attack, taurine is not included in most cat food). We slice up the chicken heart, and mix it with the ground chicken and package it into ziploc bags, and pull one bag a day out of the fridge and plop it in their dishes. They also get free-choice high quality cat food by Canidae, but they hardly eat any of it.

If you arn't into a raw diet, go with a high quality cat food, like Canidae, or similar.

When I saw you question, I giggled, because we also have a Saint Bernard who, if we fed him a commercial diet, would have to eat 50 cans of dog food a day to get any nutrients at all.

you are feeding them WAY too much. and feeding them canned food they are going to poop a lot! get some quality dry food (I recomend natural choice complete care indoor kitten formula dry food). feed according to the package and divide up the amount into 2-4 feedings. don't give them canned food or soft food except for once in a while for a treat maybe.

Before, shipping them back to the pound try switching from can food to dry cat food. This may help.

I have two cats and I only feed them dry cat food.
