My son does the same exact thing. I bought him a jacket and he wore it once and lost it. I had to go buy another. I told him he better make sure and put it in his backpack. I wrote his name inside it just in case and well, I told him that if he loses that one I wasnt going to be able to afford to keep buying him more. We dont live up north or anything so its not like we wear them that often, but I still dont want to buy one everytime a front blows through. I dont know what to tell you , except to constantly remind him about it. That is what I did to my son Everyday I reminded him several times to not put down his jacket and lose it. I think he got tired of hearing me.

Have you ever asked the school why a child's sweater doesn't show up in the school's Lost and Found ?
Also, have you thought of sewing your son's initials and grade on the sweater ?
Somehow, I just conveyed the answer in the form of questions. :)

maybe you shouldn't buy any more sweatshirts for him. If he can't keep track of them, he will have to spend his own money to replace them. Kids don't want to spend their money on boring stuff like necessities.

Sew them to his pants... just kidding. Explain to him the expense and maybe take something away from him until he deciedes to be responsible to bring them home.
bring it home... 1/2 hour later to stay up.
forgets... not t.v.
