Not knowing how long you're gone , makes this difficult to answer. A young pup cannot be left alone for hours.

If you're out of the house all day, you might want to think about adopting an older dog that is housebroken and won't have accidents or destroy your house while you're at work.

Puppies can be left alone while you're at work, but be prepared to come home to quite a poopy mess unless you're keeping it outside. Cleaning up a little poop from his crate won't be that hard though.

The big problem will be the loneliness. It really isn't good for an attention demanding puppy to be left alone all that time. Make a decent sized play area to keep it in while you're at work and get two puppies instead of one.

The breed will depend on your lifestyle and the size of your home. If you have a small house, get a small breed, or a large breed that isn't very high strung. If you live in a big house or have access to a big yard, maybe a bigger, higher strung breed would be more fun for you.

someone on here told u not to get a dog at all--if i were u i wouldn't listen to them--it get's annoying when people preach on here...

if u want a dog, and if u feel u have the time and energy to love a dog, then get a dog. but i wouldn't suggest a young puppy though...i would suggest getting an older dog, maybe from a rescue or a humane society. i work in one and believe me, these dogs need love too :) get a dog that is at least, 2 yrs old. that way, the puppy instinct will be gone...most older dogs are already paper trained too. as for what kind you should get? since u live alone, u might do okay with a maltese. maltese stick to one person only, so that might be a good choice. but if u like large dogs, labs are also good. i suggest going to the akc website and search for the breed that fits your needs. Here is the website : http://www.akc.org

Good Luck with whatever type of dog you choose ;)

Tell ya what... A little different perspective

You are going to come live with me, and it will be great!

You will sleep on my bed with me (if you want), or we can firgure out other sleeping arrangements, whatever works for you. Then when I wake up, I'm going to pick you up and put you in a cage. And in that cage you wil sit, all alone, by yourself, and even though you have a lot of trouble holding back those bathroom urges, you also know you don't do those sort of things where you sleep. So you are going to have find some way to just "hold it" for what could be eight, nine, maybe ten hours.

And there you will sit until I get home....

Oh, I'm not going to be able to feed you like I'm supposed to feed you, so I'm going to have to just fill a bowl with puppy chow or something --we'll figure it out. But the problem here is that you wouldn't know what to do with it anyway, and most likely you would eat the entire bowl the moment I put it in the cage, or the first time you decided to eat, and that would screw up your stomach.

But after you sat in a cage for at least 9 or 10 hours, didn't eat right, and strained yourself beyond what you should be doing, I'll finally come home and let you out of your cage, take you outside and let you do your thing, and we will spend maybe 4 hours together, then you get to sleep wherever you choose to sleep.

Then we get to repeat the same process all over again tomorrow!

Still wanna live with me?

well a new puppy won't be a good idea especially if you work all day. the best dog to get is an olde one that doesn't mind being left alone during the day. don't get a puppy because it would be very unfair for the dog becasue he will be alone all day and that is when they develope bad habits. get an older one for now and save a life that really needs it.

Don't get one if you work all day! What is the puppy going to do for 7+ hours?
If you want a puppy, get two so they can keep each other company.
Will you have enough time to house-break it? Have enough money for one or two puppies for 10+ years? Walk the dog a few times a day for over an hour? Will you be able to wake up every 2 hours letting them/it out to go potty?
Don't get one; I don't think you have enough time and I don't think you would be able to commit 10+ years of your life to this puppy.

a new puppy can not be left inthe house for long period of time 5 hoursd without having to be let out to pee. You should consider getting a rescue dog that is 1 or 2

maybe an older dog vs a puppy . i worked all day and had a puppy but she stayed in her run during those time so she could potty and tear up things in there. Maybe if you have a trusted kid you could hire tham to walk you dog/puppyafter school :)
what kind depends on were you live .I gather you live in a city so maybea smaller dog .
good luck and have fun

I feel, it would be inhumane to get a puppy if you work all day. thee is no way you can train the pup and eventually you will feel mad at the pup who becomes a dog is not trained. If you still really want a dog, consider getting a grown dog who has been trained. Look in the local shelters and talk with the animal workers about your problem and get them to suggest which dog would be best suited for you. which one has fantastic bladder and bowel control. i know this sounds silly, but it is something to really think about before getting a pet. You must be a responsible pet owner, okay???

a stuffed animal puppy! no mess no upkeep!-----if you still want one? why not go to the shelter and adopt an older already trained dog who enjoys companionship but rests a lot, like sleeps all day? would work out for both of you!! and maybe a puppy wouldnt have to be trained? a lot of work!!
