Taking my son for a Blood Test. He's 5 years old

He becomes hysterical around needles, starts screaming, and last time, he hit the nurse. ( not hard lol). So he didn't get it done.

I know i shouldn't allow him to, be like that. He's just sooo scared.

I'm taking him back on monday.

They said, that they will restrain him. How will they do this. ???

Do i have to be in the room? I hate seeing him that upset.

I reckon you may let your son watch some other kid getting blood drawn showing him how easy that would be. Also explaining him it wont be hurting & the procedure is just to find germs. If possible try showing him under microscope how it would look like & also he can tell his friends about all this. He is a boy & would be pretty happy to see gadgets around him. This technique is called tell-show-do which is generally followed by dentists like myself.

Also you need to be strong before your son as he will panick more if he sees you upset & reward his good behaviour & ignore bad.

Another reason may be he is not comfortable with environment, so trying with another clinic would be alternative.

If still uncoperative, then needles to be placed out of his sight & diverting his attention before procedure. I recommend this to be last option as personally i wouldnt be liking it myself.

Ask the staff who has the most experience to withdraw the
blood. Hopefully it will hurt less. Explain everything that is
going to happen before he goes. Ask him what it is about needles that upset him. Explain that it is only a poke and
if it hurts just say, "OW". Show him pictures of a body;s veins and tell him about how the blood travels through the vein. If he understands what is happening inside his body he might be calmer. What ever you do don't leave
him alone. He'll need you there. Don't let him see the needle and have him look away. Have someone keep talking to him during the procedure to keep his mind
off of what is happening. Restrain him might mean strapping him down. This only make things worse.
See if you can give him a sedative before the procedure
to help him relax. Good luck!

Be in the room w/him. You're the mom and he needs to know you're there for him. One suggestion: have him drink a lot of water the night before and the morning also. It makes it easier for blood to be drawn. That's what I've been told. My veins "move," and are hard to find. Drinking enough water ahead of time eases the process. Explain to him that he's not being hurt for no reason. Try to tell him in terms he can understand that it's necessary and why. The more he understands why, then the fear may lessen somewhat.

Maybe offer him a reward if he does well and behaves? I'm not sure how they'd restrain him though, you shuld probably ask before you take him in.

for one you should be in the room by leaving it is teaching your son that he should be scared. you should bring his favorite stuffed animal or some thing like that and have him sit in your lap and hold the toy that way he will feel better because he is close to you and he will have his favorite toy it will distract him and you will be better able to keep him from hitting and kicking.

all you can really do is comfort him and let him know it has to be done to keep him healthy.

When my daughter had to get x-rays for pneumonia they restrained her with a harness and straps...it was aweful and it broke my heart.

but...you HAVE to stay with him. think of how much more terrified he would be if he saw you leaving at a time he needed you!
