To my understanding, you gat paid $5 for jury duty for a half day of service and $10 for a full day. Well, in a average person’s salary (even with minimum wage) you make a lot more than this, right? Therefore, why do they pay you so little? Also, where did this come from or who made this up? I am new to this and have never been yet, but am just curious.

It's your civil duty. We're fortunate to get anything at all really.

Makes absolutely no sense, c'mon, everyone else there is earning a lot of money. Judge, 6 figures or more (what a wonderful "service"). The lawyers are making a killing, oh but the rest of us schmucks should just walk up there for free, basically, because do you really think $10 - $40 is actually paying my bills! Will the utility company waive my bill during jury duty because I did my "civil duty"?

if that's what your state pays for jury duty, I'd move.

Not that any state is better. NY pays you $40 IF your employer pays you less than $40 a day. I'm sure all states vary with reimbursement for services, but I believe the Board of Jurors are trying to make all rules, regulations, and payments more uniform across the country.

They say it's your duty, but just tell everyone you believe in the death penalty and enjoy the ride home.

It depends on the State that you reside in. In Illinois, especially in Cook County, you receive $17.20 a day for jury duty. This amount includes transportation fee. If I remember correctly, $15.00 was for jury duty and $2.20 was for transportation. The amount one gets paid for jury duty is set by the General Assembly and is written into law through your State Statutes.

I think the money is to pay your gas to get there and back. Maybe to feed yourself. Unless they feed you. There are side benefits, your boss cannot fire you for being on the jury. That's nice. And its great we have a system that has jury's. How about in Russia back during the cold war. Maybe China now. Korea? Before you do too much bitching, i would see what other systems there are. Then you can be glad to be here.

They would have to raise taxes in order to pay you more. They also feel like it's your duty as a citizen.

Think of it as gas money.

Most employers will pay you, as THEIR civic duty, I have always been paid, even before I worked from home.

Maybe because they spend 30K a year to lock up people for stupid things like drug posession so there isn't much left to pay the jurors.
