HDMI transfers audio and video from an HDMI audio/video source. But, you can choose to use one or the other depending on what you are connecting to.

I, too, am using video only through HDMI from my Comcast HDTV box. Then, I am using an optical TOSlink audio cable from the Comcast box to my AV receiver.

In short, the answer is "yes". You can use video only.

Updated: HDMI has the ability to transfer audio and video on two separate data streams in the HDMI cable. It's up to the HDMI receiving device to break up the audio and video streams.

How is your A/V eceiver getting its audio? Are you using a coax or optical output from your DirecTV receiver? If so, you do not want the audio coming over your HDMI line, even though it carries that signal If your receiver has HDMI inputs, then you can use the HDMI for both audio and video; but if you have an older receiver with no HDMI inputs, you must use the digital audio output separately. In summary, it is not only ok to use HDMI for video only, in your case it is probably necessary,

To understand the answer you first need to know what HDMI and DVI are and what they mean. HDMI or High Definition Media interface cables are just that. They transfer both video, colors, audio and even some data over the cables. While not as good but close and mostly used in computers a DVI or digital video interface cable can also work you can also get an HDMI to DVI input cable and then use the audio cables for your sound to your surround sound system. Are you using the infrared input to get hi quality audio. Check the back of your unit. My PS2 has on I never knew what it was till I saw it used on a 211 HDTV dish network reciever and wow. Better picture and sound then even the theaters have.
