Hmm. Yes, these are two active, intelligent breeds who still have strong working tendencies, and barking is common with cattledogs. I agree with others that they need lots of exercise and "work" to do...but it sounds like you are doing a good job of providing that and trying to control Abby's access to resources. People tend to throw the ADD/hyperactivity label around but, by gum, you may be right! I would talk to the vet about the possibility of running some tests to diagnose this and provide some medication if the tests are positive. If she is not hyperactive, Abby really might need more work to do. Not just exercise but brain work - agility, Rally, obedience training, trick training, etc. She should also be taught to be calm around things that stimulate her. For instance, have her do a ten second down/stay 20 or 30 feet away from another dog, then gradually increase the duration of the stay while decreasing the proximity to the object. You can also remove her when she becomes overly excited. For instance, if she is playing with other dogs and starts her high-pitched barking, leave. Return either in 30 seconds or when she is calm, whichever is last. Repeat until she gets the idea that some self-control is required if she wants to have fun.

I have the same problem with my pup right now and my suggestion is 1. obedience classes - they wont calm him down too much but he'll listen to every word you say including "settle" or "calm" 2. buy him some interactive toys - you can find them online or buy a food dispensing toy from wal-mart. Energetic dogs tend to have busy minds and if they don't have enough to do (i.e. fun toys & bones) they will quickly get into trouble. 3. Take your dog for a walk everyday or as close to every day as you can. This will help him get out some of his energy. and finally 4. contact a local dog trainer and/or vetinarian and ask for suggestions. They can come up with some good stuff. Good luck and don't forget to give your dog lots of love and affection.

I have two answers for you :
1. Do a Google search for "NILIF", or Nothing In Life Is Free. Following this program will teach your dog that you provide all of the good stuff in his life. Hand feed him his dinner, and work on a few simple tricks to do (sit, down, spin, speak, hand touch, etc) so that you're not just feeding him for no reason. Doing NILIF with plenty of exercise will give your dog a healthy outlet for all of that energy!
2. I don't know if you'll ever be up for doing any sports with your dog (agility would probably be great for him!) but reading this book

would be great for you. Lots of insights here for people with high-drive dogs!

Give him more individual, one on one attention. Pet him and talk to him. Try not to leave him for prolonged times. Meet all his physical needs quickly. Give him plenty of exercise. If you live where you can not do this. You need another type of dog.

LOL! I Love it! A dog with ADHD!

but seriously, dedicate some time to him when you're free and just play with him until he tires out then give him a treat as reward while giving him a command word.

my cousin uses the word "relax" and his dog does just that. she stops and sits there quietly

It depends on the breed pet smart runs classes for redirecting bad behavior more breeds are more hipper than others and spay and neutering make a difference especially if its in that teenage stage.

You need to show dominance and be assertive. Teach your dog to become calm and submissive. You are the pack leader.
