I've owned an adult toystore for the last 9 years. The largest fetish shop on the web actually. :) I have told everyone that we sell shoes. It's true! We sell shoes and lots of other things. Those in the know, already know. It keeps others from asking impolite questions or from telling you information you just DON'T WANT TO KNOW!

Why can't you ? And then on the other hand, it is none of their business, right ? So, just do this, for the people you make the money off of, you can tell them what you do & for the others you just make up some lie. Tell them you work on your computer. It's really a no-brainer.

How about saying you're in Real Estate Sales. That could explain unusual hours and trips to various places.

If you're very computer savy, you could say you're one of those Computer Geeks, who help individuals set up their PC's and solve their problems.

I hope you are careful and that you save your money in order to retire from your profession in the not too distant future. Then perhaps you could write a book.

I don't mean to sound flip, but unless it's illegal where you live, you should be really proud of what you do to support yourself and your family. Having said that, I think you need a sense of humor - tell them you are intensely involved in psycho-social research!
