There are a lot of great brands. Nikon, Cannon, Olympus, these are all really great. The Kodaks that I have handled seem light weight and cheaply built, but that is only my personal opinion. Basically, check out which models you like best. Which ones feel best in your hand is what I mean.

I'd say Nikon, Sony, Canon and Olympus are all excellent brands. Prices are all over the map, depending how many megapixels you want and how much optical zoom you want.

Nikon is definitely good, i have one and i can't believe the quality!
