I don't know what your budget is, but anything educational and fun at this age is really preferred by parents. I have a 5 year old and his favorite toys from last year (that he still uses all the time) are:
1. Leapster
2. V-Tech Smile
3. Smart Globe by Oregon Scientific
4. Cadoo (game VERY cool that boys love)
What my son is begging for this year (less educational) is:
1. Lite Brite
2. Floam
3. Blokus (game)
Of course there is always a Toy-R-Us Gift Card which is always appreciated.

I don't know what your budget is but we got a 2 seater Jeep for our 4 year old last year and he loved it and so do his friends. He loves his Leap Pad. Many friends recommend the Leapster, but I am not into hand-held video games for kids (and then he would never use his Leap Pad again!). Cranium Cariboo, Cranium Balloon Lagoon, Guess Who, and Whack-a-Mole are some of the games we are getting our 4 year old. Star Station by Fisher Price is fun. Good luck!
