They search airline websites as well as search engines (e.g. Orbitz, OneTravel, Travelocity, etc.).
I always use them; however, if you get a deal through them that's at Orbitz, if it's all on one airline, go to that airline's website, and see if it's cheaper there. There may be a difference of +/- $5-10.

It is kayak cheap tickets or priceline and for hotel deals search on orbitz and book ASAP atleast ahead of 20 days.

go directly to the airlines websites,sometime you can get good deal if you purchase it 15-20 days in advanced

I have had experience with those agencies.. travelocity.com, and many others and the best rates were when I called the airlines direct. Another one I tried was cheapflights.com..... but it was more expensive than my calling the airlines direct
