I was at Fry's Electronics yesterday...the salesman told me that if I wanted 1 yr no interest I needed to apply for a credit card, that it was nothing to be approved and I could take my purchase home. I applied. It had a "glich" and he said that 99% of the time that happens and I would get my card (which I now did not need) in about 2 wks. Another associate told me that this was standard practice. Now I have a card coming I do not need, which affects my credit whether I use it or not, and I made my purchase at Best Buy which was wonderful. Just wondered how many people fall for this scam, especially at Christmas and how many would like to know DO NOT patronize stores with this practice as they MAKE money off your getting the card whether you USE IT OR NOT and it DOES stay with your credit no matter what..

for techman...there was NOTHING to read...the salesman turned a computer screen around for info to be inputted AFTER stating that this would be all it takes for 0% for one year and then stating AFTER that 99% of the time they do not go through RIGHT AWAY. But that it DOES come in 2 to 3 weeks. And that this was STANDARD PRACTICE for the store..but you are right lesson learned and trying to pass it on.

You mean it was their store credit card? Never encountered that one before. I would just tell them to go pound sand.

What you are explaining is not a scam or fraud, it's normal business practice. Everyone should know that any type of store that advertises 0% interest involves applying for a credit card. Your balance needs to be managed by some type of financial institution. The store certainly would not manage your money. If they are going to get a 0% balance, they need to do a credit check and ensure that you are good for it and accountable for it.

I admit that the sales person seem to mislead or misinform you. But, you need to make sure you read all the fine print before signing up for something like that. Lesson learned, right?

Stores do this because they most likely get a bonus for every person they can get to sign up for the offer. It's not right and yes it does suck.

And I wish "man" would **** off.
