those who run from the police in their vehicles? It happens too often and too many innocent people are killed or injured in these chases, not to mention putting law enforcement officers' lives in unnecessary danger. I would think an automatic death sentence may serve as a good deterent to run. What are your thoughts?

* Millie: I assumed people would realize that this would be after a trial, but I recommend this after you are tired and found guilty, of course.

I think shipping them to Antarctica would be best.
You don't have to pay a staff. Just send a helicopter once a month to drop off food, clothes and building materials.

The death penalty is used so rarely in the U.S. takes so long to implement and is so staggeringly expensive what you suggest is impractical. Moreover, because executions are so rare it is actually safer to be on death row than to be a drug dealer in L.A. ( see the book Freakonomics).
Finlay, your suggestion would not pass constitutional muster. The Furhman decision barred capital punishment for simple murder without special circumstances, there is know way that executions for fleeing from the police would be allowed.

Oh yeah, one of the safest professions out there (40 cops shot last year) and you want the death penalty against some 14 year kid out for a joy ride. to protect the police??? I think we need a death penalty for any cop who shoots and unarmed citizen.

I think it would depend on a) How long the chase lasted; b)How many, (if any), people were killed/seriously injured; and c) What they were originally being pulled over for.

so you're saying they're guilty without a trial and deserve to die because they ran?
Nope.... guilt is the one that has to be proven, not innocence..
By itself, someone running does not prove guilt. It might help, but it is not the deciding factor.

If they kill someone while running it is already an option for the charging agency. if they do not kill some one then the death penalty would not be appropriate!!
