Believe it or not...the larger breeds would be the best. I've had ferrets for nearly five years. I have a dachshund/rat terrier that plays with them, a pit bull who ignores them, and several breeds in between who don't mind them at all. The pit bull had to be taught they're not play toys (as have all the other breeds), but this foster dog who is up for adoption can now be in a home with ferrets and they not worry about a fert getting injured. You may want to stay clear of the high strung breeds who have excess energy levels, such as the boxer and husky and a few others, but those like the great dane and golden retriever would make really good choices.
Use common sense and strict supervision when first introducing a new dog. Make sure your ferrets are immunized against rabies...and the dog is, too. If you get a puppy...I would worry more about the puppy getting bitten by a ferret than the other way around. My littlest girl will chase the pit bull trying to bite his ankles...;-)

Sorry to tell you this, but a ferret is on a dogs food chain. The only exception that I have ever seen is when the dog is a puppy and the ferret is young as well and they both grow up together. I'd be worried about your ferret always if you got a dog.

all dogs have the hunt instinct some are just stronger than others. deffently stay away from terriers. A herding breed would be the best choice as they were breed to protect not kill

I had a chow when i had my ferret, poddles and other small breeds can get along with them as well. Your best to get a young dog or a puppy so that you can trian it to not hunt cuase all dogs have the instinct to hunt.

It is hard for me to answer this question since I am not sure which kinds of dogs are like this. You may want to ask someone that spends a lot of time with the dog you are thinking about getting to tell you about it's personality and how it acts toward smaller animals.

I can't help you with which breed to get but I can definately tell you not to get any kind of terrier! I saw where a papillon with puppies took a pet squirrel and treated it as if it were her own. But if you are interested in a big dog, I don't know about that one!

I have three ferrets and a german shepherd mixed puppy (16 months old). I have to watch him when they are playing together because he may get excited and stomp on one of them by accident, but he has grown up with my fuzzies and knows that they are just 'babies' and wouldn't really hurt them. You might want to get a female dog, and try to get her maternal instinct to accept the ferret as babies. (I also have a smaller shih tzu-toy poodle mix and have caught him trying to 'bathe' one of my ferrets who promptly latched onto the old dog's tounge and nearly pierced it!)

Well definitly NOT terriers and big hounds because they are BRED FOR Hunting game. So I would say best smaller dogs and maybe dogs that are easy going around children too
