Cops are capable of intercepting text messages and getting email passwords and myspace account log in information almost instantaneously. All we need is some reasonable suspicion; then a quick phone call or in some cases live tech support; maybe respond to a fax and the information is available to police agencies so they can log into accounts or monitor communications. Just remember unless you are involved in something that law enforcement agencies would want to know about they're not going to report to your friends on how you secretly listen to old Wham singles....

Yes, I do believe that they can and do. While they are not supposed to do this without a court order they still do it. Although they can't use it against you in court when they are doing it without an order they use it to get information to find something they can get to get a court order. Not everything they want is to use against someone in court. Cops know that knowledge is power. If you're texting something you don't want the cops to know about then I'd advise you to give up crime, it's not for you.

I know from news reports here in the US. that cops patrol computers and the over-all websites of them constantly. Other countries could be different.

the place are you from? while you're from the united kingdom, the police have powers by way of the regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 to faucet your telephone, yet there is strict rules which they must stick to for doing so. in the U. S., to the terrific of my know-how FBI in simple terms have 'warning words' that forward all text cloth messages to a mandatory database that are then without delay checked, words like "bomb" or "drugs" for example.

Only if they have a court order to do so, otherwise the evidence they gathered through illegal means is tainted, and inadmissible in court.

It is not legal for them to do this and they could care less unless they are looking at you for doing something.
