This is a good idea to consider since rescue missions are costly. I think it should depend on their skill level. Not only for mountain climbers though for all high risk adventurists. something like a Lourdes of London insurance coverage would be good. those who are experts are higher risk because they trek on the most challenging climbs. also, this is a voluntary risk and not the same as hiking and slipping into a creek. i supposed they usually figure it won't happen to them, but just as rescue efforts would be put forth for someone to be saved from any other accident/incident, it is right to try to help them if they are lost, hurt or in danger. It may be a good idea to require a surety bond for the adventurous who willingly test fate for the sole purpose of achievement or just plain being reckless. another thing is that when rescue missions take place, it is also putting the lives of those who are rescuing in danger, so not only are the victims of the incident in trouble, so are the members of the teams that have to come to their aid. sometimes to save the victims from themselves because they have put themselves in a situation that was obviously dangerous. most of the time mountain climbing is not something that is competive in the usual way, it's a personal challenge for those who like it. The same could be said of hot air balloonists. What is the purpose? Most of these high risk activities are not helping to make this world better for anyone. If they were carrying food to hungry childeren on the mountain, that would be a different story altogether.

What does the Helo pilot have to do with mountain climbing?
No the hikers shouldn't be FORCED (as you say) to post a bond! Just because you think something is scary or dangerous, why should you stop others from doing it? How about the Kim Family in Oregon who got stuck in the snow?
Should we outlaw and ban driving in the snow?
Yes climbing can be a dangerous activity, but very rewarding!

As far as the helo pilot he should have charged a greater fee. Personally I do not think any rescue attempt should be made for individuals engaging in obviously risky activities. They were aware of the risk when they began and knew there was a chance of death. It is their responsibility and if they die then it is only natural selection, the dumb/weak are killed off.

As one that once had to be rescued I say no. Luckily with our rescue the rescue group was glad "to use their skills." It was a small town and they had never been called rescue anyone. We made their day. We were rescued via ATV and a helicopter.
